Position: Tax Resolution Specialist We’re seeking a detail‑oriented and proactive
Tax Resolution Specialist
to join our public accounting firm. The specialist manages and resolves federal and state tax notices received by clients, communicating directly with tax authorities, preparing response documentation, and coordinating with internal tax teams to ensure timely and accurate resolution of client tax issues. This role serves as the key liaison between the firm, clients, and government agencies. The position can be hybrid or in‑office at either of our Chicago suburban offices: Frankfort or Northbrook.
Base Pay Range $100,000.00/yr – $125,000.00/yr
Key Responsibilities
Review and analyze IRS and state tax notices received by clients.
Collaborate with tax professionals to determine the cause of each notice and develop an appropriate response.
Draft and submit written responses to tax authorities, complete with supporting documentation in a timely manner.
Communicate with clients to gather necessary information.
Liaise with IRS and state tax agencies via phone or correspondence to resolve issues.
Monitor and update notice statuses while maintaining accurate records of all correspondence and resolutions in the firm’s systems.
Stay abreast of the latest IRS developments and recommend process improvements to reduce future occurrences.
Innovate internal notice process, conduct training to educate tax professionals on IRS procedures.
Engage in negotiations with the IRS on behalf of clients regarding collections, appeals, and audits.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field (preferred).
3+ years of experience in tax or a similar role, preferably in public accounting.
Enrolled Agent (EA) or CPA designation required.
Strong understanding of IRS and state tax procedures, including common notice types (e.g., CP2000, CP501, IDOR letters).
Knowledge of basic tax documents and common income tax forms such as 1040, 1041, 706, 709, 941, 1065, 1120, 990.
Experience with IRS e‑Services online tools and Transcript Delivery System (TDS).
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent organizational, multitasking, and time‑management abilities.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams).
Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
Preferred Skills
Experience with client communication and tax agencies for daily tax issue resolution.
Knowledge of 401(k) plan administration.
Understanding of MST and CPA reimbursement processes.
Familiarity with annual bonus pool structures.
Commitment to work/life balance and generous paid time off.
