Job overview and responsibilities The Director- Line Maintenance Planning

leads the team which includes both the Network Operations Center (NOC) Line Planning and the maintenance location-based Field Planning teams in administering all routine and non-routine planning functions for its fleet of 1050+ aircraft while ensuring all required items are scheduled within their maintenance program limits in a safe and compliant way that enables aircraft to be made available to the deliver the network schedule. The Director reports directly to the Managing Director Tech Ops Strategy & Performance. This role will require strategic thinking, regular onsite presence within the NOC, and strong interorganizational relationships.

Oversee all aspects of the planning of Line Maintenance activities including packaging, implementation and scheduling of all planned line maintenance events, line hold aircraft and out of service aircraft.

Provide centralized decision making for NOC Fleet and Field Planning teams in the effective scheduling (labor, parts, tooling, facilities) of Line.

Maintenance phase checks, Line Special Visits, aircraft modifications, Routine and Non‑Routine tasks, deferred maintenance tasks including MEL, DIP, and NEF items, and the scheduling of other tasks associated with all aspects of the aircraft lifecycle and associated maintenance program.

Architect and drive all administrative aspects of Line Planning organization through visionary leadership including: goal and priority setting; developing mission‑oriented team culture and engagement that understands what success is and achieves it through optimal “planning” vs. “scheduling” work, while balancing strong SOP compliance with leadership autonomy; management and coordination of departmental resources, including Planner digital tools & job training; change‑agent drive toward continuous evolution and improvement.

Communicate and coordinate with Line Maintenance and Tech Ops Maintenance Control leadership, NOC Daily Operations, and associated support departments to ensure alignment of activities.

Collaborate with aircraft routing and network operations leadership as the “advocate for the aircraft” to ensure: (i) specific tails terminate at desired maintenance locations for planned maintenance events; (ii) Tech Ops’ allocated time in the Network Schedules is repaired if not preserved; (iii) the operational delivery of the schedule meets Tech Ops’ “MMR” thresholds.

Disposition extension requests of any extensions of deferred items such as MELs.

Partner with Line Strategy & Tech Ops Analytics on schedule development criteria and inputs, and tools to monitor schedule performance, to ensure maintenance opportunities are sufficient to meet the maintenance program and aircraft downtime needs.

Be a key contributor to the Tech Ops Resource Planning, MMR Evolvement, and Tech Ops Transformation initiatives to drive operational excellence.

This role is full-time onsite at the Arlington Heights, IL NOC facility and not a hybrid position

What’s needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications)

Bachelor’s degree or 4+ years of relevant work experience

Operations Management, Supply Chain, Business, Engineering, Aviation Technology or Management, or related field or 10+ years of related experience

7+ years of experience in Airline Operations Management and/or Planning

Strong background and knowledge of aircraft maintenance systems

Working knowledge of Maintenance Programs, Aircraft Routing, Aircraft Maintenance Operations, and FAA/Regulatory Compliance

Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint applications

Strong collaboration, and verbal and written skills with ability to effectively interact at all levels and partner with internal and external stakeholders

Ability to prioritize projects and initiatives

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

Master’s degree

System Operations or Technical Operations Maintenance Planning, Maintenance Control, or Maintenance Production

A&P certification

Knowledge of United airlines GMM and Maintenance Program
