Summary

Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care using the nursing process in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities

Education – Identify and meet learning needs of self; attend education programs; use patient education materials relevant to the patient population; assess readiness to learn of patient/family/caregivers; assess developmental level and factors affecting learning.

Evaluation of Care – Identify expected patient outcomes; seek guidance as needed in revision of the plan of care; participate in interdisciplinary discussions to evaluate patient care; communicate relevant information to promote continuity of care.

Implementation – Demonstrate competence in care of patients with complex problems, including physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety aspects of care; perform bedside point-of-care testing as required; follow organization and nursing standards, policies and procedures; organize and prioritize care; consult resources in a timely manner for complex issues or high-risk discharge planning.

Leadership – Develop professional goals with assistance; achieve or renegotiate goals within defined time frames; promote interdepartmental collaboration; participate in unit goals and performance improvement activities; use communication systems effectively; promote cost-effective care; provide feedback to co-workers; be aware of public policy and regulatory guidelines; maintain a safe, clean, and secure hospital environment.

Patient Assessment – Recognize data from complex situations to determine care priorities; assess physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs; synthesize assessment data; anticipate discharge needs and build relationships with families to support patient advocacy.

Planning – Collaborate with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care; utilize multidisciplinary resources; communicate planning effectively; address cultural and ethnic issues in care planning; prioritize tasks for patients with complex problems.

Research – Read journals for applicable studies; share ideas with the staff to assess applicability to practice.

Qualifications Education Requirements

Graduation from a school of professional nursing.

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina by the day of clinical care.

Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
