Principal Applied Scientist – Microsoft 365 Copilot Microsoft 365 Copilot is the next generation of AI productivity tools that empowers users worldwide. The Microsoft Turing team is looking for a Principal Applied Scientist to design, develop, and ship cutting‑edge model‑driven features that power Copilot chat and other enterprise experiences.

In this role you will work at the intersection of research and engineering—advancing orchestrator reasoning, training next‑generation models, and shipping impactful, model‑driven experiences in Microsoft 365 Copilot. You will also lead the effort to build core systems that enable Copilot Chat to deliver intelligence, quality, and transformative new features. This position requires onsite work 3 days a week in Microsoft’s Redmond, WA offices.

Responsibilities

Advance the state of the art in model training and orchestration, including fine‑tuning, reinforcement learning, and high‑quality data curation.

Build and deliver model‑driven features from concept to production, covering model development, evaluation, metrics, and A/B testing.

Collaborate with engineers and researchers to advance deep learning, natural language processing, multimodal models, and model optimization techniques.

Measure, analyze, and report on model performance, quality, and impact using predictive analytics and statistical methodologies.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years of related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research).

OR Master’s degree in the same fields AND 4+ years of related experience.

OR Doctorate in the same fields AND 3+ years of related experience.

OR equivalent professional experience.

4+ years of experience in end‑to‑end solution design, execution, and service operation.

4+ years of experience shipping AI products at internet scale with low latency and high throughput.

Strong customer‑centric, impact‑driven mindset in design and development.

Other Requirements Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check every two years.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree AND 9+ years of related experience, OR Doctorate AND 6+ years of related experience.

5+ years of experience creating publications such as patents, libraries, or peer‑reviewed academic papers.

2+ years of presenting at conferences or community events as an invited speaker.

Publications in top conferences such as ACL, EMNLP, SIGKDD, AAAI, WSDM, COLING, NIPS, ICASSP, etc.

Pay and Benefits The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 – $274,800 per year. In the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City, the range is USD $188,000 – $304,200 per year.
