Qualifications
Minimum 1 year of previous working experience within the last 36 months (3 years) as a Psychologist
Proficient in the English language and able to communicate effectively
Ability to build rapport with clients
Strong leadership qualities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Valid and current CPR card (American Heart Association)
Must have the required licenses, permits, and/or certifications in the state of CA
Responsibilities
Serve as clinician-of-the-day, available for on‑call during scheduled work days for patient emergencies
Work cooperatively with staff from all classifications to enhance professional relationships
Conduct initial mental health evaluations including criminal, psychological, and substance abuse case history to assess inmate’s needs and make treatment recommendations
Conduct clinically sound suicide risk evaluations, including review, protocol application, documentation, and consultations as needed
Meet with mentally ill inmates/wards for crisis intervention, group psychotherapy, face‑to‑face interviews, and other required clinical interactions
Identify signs and symptoms of psychiatric disorders to assess, diagnose, and manage presenting symptomatology
Apply psychological assessments for selection, administration, scoring, and interpretation of tests
Write clinical reports, diagnoses, prognoses, and develop treatment plans reflecting standard practice
Consult on complex cases with supervisor, treatment team members, and institutional healthcare personnel
Document all care provided, including face‑to‑face contacts and Interdisciplinary Treatment Team meetings
Monitor inmate progress using SOAPE-formatted progress notes
Apply community standard of practice for psychological treatment modalities while maintaining ethical standards
Perform mental status exam (MSE) during interviews
Examine prior mental health records, institutional charts, probation reports, court records, and other documents to assist in diagnosis and treatment planning
Establish collaborative ties with community programs, agencies, and groups to develop supportive relationships as approved by the supervisor
Conduct mental health education and develop resources for mentally ill and sex offender inmates/wards
Assist patients in applying for entitlement benefits (SSI), community programs, and services
Participate in IDTT meetings
Compile and analyze data from audits pertaining to mental health program requirements
Provide information to support staff for data entry (e.g., appointment documentation, no-shows)
Provide written reports and consult with the Board of Prison Hearing and other CDCR staff
Provide relatives/caregivers with information only after receiving signed release of information
Develop therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and caretakers to enhance treatment delivery
Represent the department at formal and informal settings regarding mental health matters
Maintain order and supervise conduct of persons committed to the facility to prevent escapes or injury
Give input and help implement new programs for treatment, training, or rehabilitation of patients/youths
