Job Overview
Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) is the largest fire and emergency services provider in Oregon, serving the city of Portland and the regional metropolitan area. PF&R seeks qualified and experienced firefighter EMT and paramedics to join the agency.

Lateral firefighter EMT/paramedics must currently be a full‑time/career firefighter with at least 2 years experience, no separation time or break in service longer than 120 days between employers. Part‑time, volunteer, sleeper/resident, paid‑on‑call, or seasonal do not apply.
Responsibilities Lateral firefighter EMT/paramedics will:
Attend the 20‑week entry‑level fire academy.
Complete 12 months of probation.
Maintain a paramedic license for five (5) years from date of hire.
Pay and Benefits Base annual salary range for firefighters with 2+ years experience: $98,063.68 – $111,538.44. Paramedics receive a 13% premium of the top step firefighter base hourly rate after passing the paramedic field training evaluation program.
Step 3 – $47.15/hr ($98,063.68/yr)
Step 4 – $50.28/hr ($104,582.92/yr)
Step 5 – $53.62/hr ($111,538.44/yr)
Additional benefits include PERS, City Charter retirement benefits, new‑hire benefits, language pay differential, and union representation by the Portland Firefighters Association (PFFA), Local 43 IAFF.
Qualifications
Currently employed as a full‑time/career firefighter with at least 2 years’ experience, no separation >120 days.
Valid EMT license (state not required).
Firefighter I and II certifications.
Hazardous Material Awareness/Operations certificate.
Preferred Qualifications
Valid paramedic license.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid driver’s license with acceptable record.
Valid Oregon EMT license; pre‑employment proof of paramedic license allows hiring as firefighter paramedic.
