SUMMARY OF POSITION The Instructor/Assistant Professor of Foundational Studies in English is responsible for working with students pursuing academic or career and technical education studies to help these individuals strengthen and develop their fundamental English skills to enter post-secondary education.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruct with various modes of delivery including videoconference and Moodle to conduct foundational English courses in Utqiaġvik, as well as eight remote village sites across the North Slope Borough of Alaska.
Instruct foundational-level English courses at the basic level (pre-college) and companion workshop courses that support college-level writing.
Instruct students both in a small group classroom setting and an individualized, computer-based, lab setting.
Prepare and maintain updated instructional materials, course outlines, and curriculum.
Participate in student assessments, academic advising, and counseling that focuses on preparing potential students for post-secondary education.
Liaise Learning Resource Center (tutoring services) in Student Services to design supports for foundational students.
Proxy English assessment entry tests such as Accuplacer.
Participate in professional development, as appropriate.
Maintains appropriate files and recordkeeping for grant reporting.
Complete reports and presentations, and attends meetings and special events, as required.
Actively contributes to College and community service including serving on committees and participating in College activities.
Travel periodically as required for professional development or to assist with student assessment and academic support in outlying North Slope or other rural Alaska villages.
Complies with College policies, procedures and administrative directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Demonstrated professional teaching experience.
Working experience that effectively used varied teaching methods for underprepared students.
Knowledge and practical experience with distance-based instruction and best practices in instructional design.
Ability to work independently.
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a multicultural environment.
Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
Demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: post-secondary educational systems, North Slope Borough (NSB) institutions and organizations; Iñupiat culture, language, values, and traditions.
Ability to interpret and represent North Slope community values, customs, and beliefs for the College.
Ability to interpret and represent College actions and western institutions to the North Slope community.
Ability to support Iḷisaġvik College’s mission.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/TRAINING [Required] Instructor Level: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in English, Education, Developmental Education, or related discipline.
Assistant Professor Level: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in English, Education, Developmental Education or related discipline and two years of post‑secondary teaching experience.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/TRAINING [Preferred]
Master’s degree or equivalent.
One year of demonstrated work experience in a rural Alaskan environment.
One year of demonstrated experience coordinating and promoting distance delivery education.
