The 6th Judicial District of the Iowa Judicial Branch in Linn County (Cedar Rapids) is seeking a Law Clerk to support judges through legal research, writing, and order preparation. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about the law and eager to contribute to the judicial process in a meaningful way.
This position will review daily motion queues and triage cases to determine which matters can be resolved through short orders and which require more extensive legal analysis. The successful candidate will manage multiple complex legal projects simultaneously, respond to urgent research requests during active court proceedings, and engage in discussions with judges regarding case status and legal issues. The position is primarily focused on civil litigation, though it may also involve criminal, probate, and small claims matters.
The successful candidate will have strong legal research and writing skills, excellent analytical abilities, and the ability to work independently and efficiently. The role requires a proactive mindset and a commitment to upholding the integrity of the judicial process. The candidate will also possess strong communication skills and the ability to professionally interact with judges, clerks, and other judicial staff.

The pay for this position is $62,088.00 annually. This is an FLSA-exempt position.
Duties and Responsibilities
Perform electronic and manual research of laws, legal opinions, policies, and regulations, and other legal precedents.
Draft or review legal documents such as legal briefs, memos, rulings, orders, and opinions.
Examine filings for legal sufficiency, jurisdiction, and proper form as required by statutes, rules, and other legal precedents.
Prepare jury instructions.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of Iowa laws and rules; Iowa Judicial Branch organization, functions, and responsibilities of the courts.
Knowledge of the principles, procedures, and practices of conducting legal research.
Ability to research, understand, and interpret state and federal law, case law, court rules, administrative rules, and legislative documents.
Ability to abide by the set laws and perform ethically.
Ability to secure confidential information.
Ability to use office technology and equipment.
Ability to meet deadlines and manage time efficiently.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Attention to detail.
Minimum Qualifications
Completed law school or legal degree, law clerk apprenticeship, or law clerk program.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree from accredited law school.
Experience in legal writing, such as participation in a law review, legal journal, or similar publication.
Experience in a law office or legal clinic.
Law school students graduating in December 2025 are eligible to apply for this position.
