Job Summary Houston Community College (HCC) is seeking an Upward Bound Instructor to support our tradition of academic excellence, student life, and community service. The instructor will provide instruction in one or more subject areas—Math, Science, English, Foreign Language, or Life Skills—to students in the Upward Bound program. These students are high school credits 9th‑10th grade, selected to increase their likelihood of progressing to post‑secondary education.

Responsibilities

Teach Upward Bound students in the designated subject area.

Develop and implement curriculum using traditional, audio‑visual, and computer‑assisted methods.

Report daily attendance and conduct ongoing assessment of student abilities and needs.

Evaluate student progress each semester and prepare weekly lesson plans.

Create a positive learning environment that enhances student learning.

Advise students on academic and career issues, and assist with registration, orientation, and assessment.

Maintain classroom discipline and participate in staff meetings and trainings.

Serve as a role model and mentor for Upward Bound students.

Prepare incident reports as needed and inform the Project Director of any problems affecting student participation or success.

May be asked to chaperone students on field trips.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science, Education, or a related field.

Experience: One to two years of teaching and/or counseling of high school students in the appropriate subject area (three years preferred).

Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Ability to motivate and relate to disadvantaged students; communicate with parents, guardians, school personnel, and community organizations; knowledge of academic support and developmental services; demonstrated ability to work with the target population; IBM‑PC computer skills.
