The Kinesiology Department at San José State University is pleased to announce a search for an Assistant Professor: Exercise Physiology beginning in August 2026. We highly encourage candidates with specializations in strength and conditioning, applied exercise physiology, expertise in physiological assessments, exercise testing, and exercise programming to apply. Candidates who possess specializations in artificial intelligence, health technology, and/or health equity are highly encouraged to apply. The Department is committed to preparing students to be agents of change who understand cutting-edge technologies and the importance of equity and diversity. We offer coursework across the breadth of kinesiology and provide a robust activity program with over 40 activity classes. We invite candidates to participate in research, scholarship, and creative activities and to engage in pedagogical practices that lead to student success. Required Qualifications
Earned Ph.D. in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Human Performance, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Science, or related discipline from an accredited institution. Doctorate must be conferred prior to the start date. Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate classes in Exercise Physiology, including Strength and Conditioning, Physiological Assessment, and ECG Interpretation and Exercise Testing. Ability and desire to serve on thesis committees, supervise theses/projects, and advise in both graduate and undergraduate programs. Experience with laboratory equipment (e.g., metabolic carts, ECGs, isokinetic dynamometers, medical BIA instruments, Biodex balance system, hydrostatic weighing, accelerometers, skinfold calipers, spirometers, lactate analyzers, etc.). Record of publications or strong potential for publications and external funding. Expertise in health technology and/or artificial intelligence as it relates to exercise physiology and health equity. Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population through experience in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or comparable activities. Preferred Qualifications
NSCA CSCS, ACSM-EP, and/or ACSM-CEP certifications, and/or membership in ACSM and/or NSCA. Interest in working with the Sport and Fitness Evaluation program offering fitness assessments to the community on a fee-for-service basis. Interdisciplinary understanding of kinesiology with enthusiasm for multidisciplinary collaboration. Key Responsibilities
Teach exercise physiology courses at undergraduate and graduate levels; supervise theses/projects; serve on thesis committees; advise students. May teach in other areas of the major, in general education, or activity programs. Conduct research, seek external funding where appropriate, present papers, and publish in professional journals. Participate in shared governance and service on department, college, and university committees. Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). Demonstrate awareness of and commitment to the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement. Other Duties
