This job opening is being used to fill current and future vacant positions in this classification at various shifts, locations and assigned days off.
ORDER OF PREFERENCE: The selection for Maintenance and Construction is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide and external candidates, respectively.
Minimum Qualifications
Education High school diploma or possession of a high school equivalency diploma (GED)
Experience Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements. A minimum of two (2) years of experience performing satisfactorily the duties of a Sheet Metal Technician, or related field.
Certification/Licensure A District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia motor vehicle operator\'s permit issued from jurisdiction of residence

Job Summary The Sheet Metal Technician performs complex sheet metal work. Employee repairs, assembles and installs sheet metal parts and assemblies, and fabricates modifications according to engineering-approved designs. The employee uses an understanding of metallurgy and industry best practices in the use of materials, parts and tools associated with sheet metal work. Materials include galvanized and black iron, aluminum and aluminum alloys, stainless steel, copper and brass sheets, lead alloys and bronze.
Job Levels: At each successive grade level of this job (Grades D, C, B, A, and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description.
The
AA Lead
level: In addition to performing the general duties and essential functions described at a mastery journeyman level, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring all work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner and acts in the absence of the supervisor as required.
Essential Functions
Fabricates sheet metal parts and assemblies according to “as-built,” original equipment manufacturer specifications or engineer-approved modifications. Responsible for layout, cut, form, join, assembly and installation for heating, air conditioning and ventilating pipes and ducts, escalator panels, roofing, and transition pieces for fire and life safety equipment such as tunnel and under platform fans. Lays out work assignments, determines methods, techniques and materials needed to effectively accomplish assignments.
Constructs items with combinations of straight and curved edges, irregular curves and planes. Operates hand and power machines such as slip roll forming machines, box and pan brakes, rotary machines with forming rills and crimpers, and bending machines.
Calculates material requirements; constructs and assembles required patterns and templates to ensure efficient use of materials. Uses soldering and welding equipment in fabrication and assembly of items, parts and assemblies.
Fabricates mechanical systems such as rectangular straight duct, rectangular radius throat, heel elbow duct and equipment casing and housing. Fabricates architectural and roofing sheet metal components such as batten seam roof panels, caps and battens, and flat lock roof panels. Applies radial line and parallel line development when constructing complex patterned items.
Refinishes and bronzes rail platform pylons and escalator panels. Ensures facilities are operationally safe, maintained, and that the appearance of the Authority\'s properties are uniform and appealing.
Completes required forms, tags, and other documentation that records maintenance work, enters data into computer records, and prepares parts requisitions for the supervisor\'s approval. Maintains equipment, systems and related mechanical devices according to Authority and manufacturer standards.
Attends and completes required safety training; follows safety best practices and maintenance guidelines.
Other Functions
Works with various departments to review manpower availability and selects an appropriate number of work orders for scheduling.
Assists in conducting physical inventory of new or rehabilitated equipment, records inventory data, and coordinates equipment numbers and serial numbers. May involve accessing equipment on or underneath railcars.
Assists in maintenance scheduling analysis by gathering interdepartmental data and developing reports for maintenance and operation offices.
Prepares scheduled maintenance projections for budget planning purposes.
Assists Maintenance Planners with procurement of needed parts for kitted jobs, ensuring non-stock parts are ordered with sufficient lead time to ensure timely delivery at staging for various scheduled work.
Visits the field to ensure all job plan steps are followed.
Serves as backup for other Maintenance Planning and Scheduling personnel when they are absent due to vacation, sickness, or special projects.
Collaborates with WMATA\u2019s internal departments including Quality, Engineering, and maintenance departments.
Trains other staff members in work methods and procedures.
