HNTB is seeking to hire a senior traffic project engineer in the Orange County or Ontario office. The ideal candidate has 8–15 years of experience in traffic engineering and operations modeling, and will support the Southern California traffic staff on operational analysis, traffic design, modeling, estimating, specifications, and report writing for freeway corridor, arterial, and transit projects at all stages of development. Typical deliverables include feasibility studies, technical studies for environmental documents, and transportation management plans (TMPs).

The candidate will also assist with traffic design work for plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) packages such as signing/striping, traffic signals, staging construction, detour plans, and traffic handling plans.

What You’ll Do

Use senior‑level technical expertise to consider a broad range of engineering solutions.

Responsible for discipline‑specific planning, work distribution, leadership, and adherence to schedule and budget on complex projects.

Assist in proposal generation and marketing responsibilities.

Develop scope of work, level of effort, and manage adherence to scope and budget within the discipline.

Oversee completeness and accuracy of the project team’s work within the technical discipline.

Provide technical guidance and mentoring to team members to achieve overall project objectives.

Coordinate technical aspects of the project with client counterparts and teaming partners at staff level.

Lead discipline delivery on larger, multidisciplinary projects and work closely with other disciplines.

Assist with coordination and planning of schedules, hours, and distribution of work for other disciplines on complex projects.

Perform other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Need

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 8 years of relevant experience, OR

Master’s degree in Engineering and 7 years of relevant experience, OR

PhD in Engineering and 6 years of relevant experience.

What We Prefer

10 years of relevant experience.

Professional Engineer (PE) or American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification, depending on discipline.

Locations: Ontario, CA; Santa Ana, CA (Irvine).

Pay ranges: Los Angeles Metro Area and Orange County, CA – $123,846.45 – $193,708.53; San Diego, Sacramento, and Inland Empire, CA – $118,461.80 – $185,286.42. The pay range is a good‑faith estimate available at the time of posting.
