The team provides Environmental Consulting, Facilities Engineering and Program/Project Management Services to Federal and private sectors. Position : Senior Fire Protection Engineer Location : Norfolk Naval Station, Norfolk, VA (design support for NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic program, Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build projects)

Responsibilities

Provide independent, timely and professional fire protection engineering support for planning, design, construction, and maintenance of facilities for the Navy, Marine Corps, and other Supported Commands, including minor works projects, specific projects, MILCON, demolition, maintenance, space utilization and facilities development Participate in conferences with project stakeholders and collaborate with other engineering and architectural disciplines to ensure system coordination and integration with project requirements Typical projects include life safety, fire protection design elements such as fire protection systems, fire alarms, mass notification, spray-applied fireproofing, fire stopping, sprinkler systems, water distribution, hydraulic analysis, fire modeling, and performance-based designs for government facilities including multi-story office buildings, steam plants, hospitals, housing, manufacturing, training, and similar structures

Requirements

Registration as Professional Engineer (PE) in Fire Protection Engineering is required Substantial professional knowledge and practical application of fire protection engineering concepts to plan, design, construct and maintain a wide range of shore-based projects Knowledge of DoD and Navy guide specifications, UFC, NFPA codes, IBC, IMC, IRC, FM Global, and related industry standards Knowledge of local, state, federal laws and codes affecting fire protection design within NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic AOR Knowledge of related architectural and engineering fields; ability to present proposed designs and study results Proficiency with Autodesk software, Microsoft Office, fire protection design/analysis software and other DoD systems Ability to document analysis results in writing and consolidate findings from others Knowledge of budgeting, planning and project management; ability to coordinate work and lead teams Compliant with Safety Policy and Guidance, and use of personal protective equipment

Experience & Education

Experience: Minimum 10 years of professional fire protection engineering design experience for new construction and renovations, compliant with codes Education: ABET-accredited program in fire protection engineering or mechanical engineering; bachelor’s or master’s degree; if degree is in mechanical engineering, PE in Fire Protection Engineering is required

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand/walk/climb/kneel/crouch and remain in a stationary position/sit at least 60% of the time Ability to operate office equipment (computer, copier, phone, etc.) Dexterity to handle objects and use hands; reach with arms Capable of lifting up to 10 lbs Near and far vision adequate to see details Clear speech for in-person and telephone communication
