Overview Downtown Veterinary Clinic is looking for a

Certified Veterinary Technician

to join our growing team.

Location: 931 E Ogden Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53202

Hospital Hours: Monday and Thursday 8am-4pm, Tuesday and Wednesday 8am-5pm. Closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Compensation: $24-28/hour

We are a full-service companion animal clinic serving Milwaukee and surrounding areas. Our services focus on routine preventive care, early disease detection, and complete medical, urgent, and surgical care as needed during a pet’s lifetime.

Job Summary The Certified Veterinary Technician provides leadership and training to the medical support staff in the operation of a small animal facility in accordance with hospital policy and procedures and provides medical care to patients as allowed in the veterinary practice act. The CVT communicates effectively with team members and clients and demonstrates strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.

Responsibilities Essential Functions The following duties reflect the expectations of this job but are not all-inclusive. The essential functions include the most significant tasks in the role:

Maintain and uphold Core Values and Mission Statement of MVP.

Provide guidance to the support staff to ensure smooth shift flow.

Mentor team members for career advancement and personal development.

Provide input to the hospital manager for 360-degree employee performance evaluations.

Provide patient care under the supervision and direction of a DVM.

Maintain excellent client communication.

Record all pertinent medical, client and case information in the patient record accurately.

Review medical records, estimates or discharge instructions with clients.

Answer client inquiries about basic animal care and routine procedures; direct to veterinarians when appropriate.

Additional Functions

Provide client care for scheduling appointments, taking payments, and checking in clients.

Answer the phones in a courteous and informative way.

Provide feedback and changes to the training program.

Participate in job shadows or working interviews as necessary.

Qualifications Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Proficiency in laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, surgery, dental, and nursing skills.

Ability to stay calm and focused in a fast-paced and stressful environment.

Ability to give SQ, IM and IV injections.

Knowledge of usage, dosage, and side-effects of commonly prescribed drugs and the ability to explain them to clients.

Knowledge of anesthesia and recovery states and the ability to alert veterinarians when concerns arise.

Ability to extubate, monitor temperature and recover a patient from anesthesia.

English language proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking.

Confident around pets.

Required Education and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent.

State Department of Regulation Licensing required.

1+ years of veterinary industry experience.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds; may require assistance for heavier lifts.

Ability to endure standing and walking on hard floor surfaces for extended periods.

Ambulatory ability to perform duties in a hospital environment.

Ability to work in noisy conditions with animal and equipment sounds.

Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch and to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medications.

Adequate vision and hearing; ability to observe, identify, and respond to clinical cues.

Travel required: Minimal travel possible for vendor visits and associate education.
