Equipment Technician - Surgery - Full Time 8 Hour Days (Non-Exempt) (Union) Equipment Technician - Surgery job overview and responsibilities focus on cleaning, maintaining, and coordinating the movement of surgical equipment to support patient care and the daily operating room schedule. This role collaborates with clinical staff, management, the Biomedical Department, Clinical Coordinators, and Supervisors to ensure equipment availability, proper status communication, and efficiency in equipment use. The position may include input into operating and capital budget needs for equipment and ensuring the overall effectiveness of operating room equipment.

As part of the operating room team, the Equipment Technician maintains and coordinates equipment movement for each surgical procedure, works with the Biomedical Department to ensure equipment is available and repaired when needed, and supports training of operating room staff on equipment use through in-services and one-on-one sessions. The role also involves budgeting input for equipment needs and ensuring the effectiveness of operating room equipment.

Responsibilities

Through vendor training demonstrates current knowledge of specific equipment associated with surgical procedures and applies that knowledge in preparation for its use.

Teach operating room staff the principles of specific equipment and its setup for surgical procedures.

Provide daily maintenance and organize equipment in the operating room.

Collaborate with the OR Supervisor and Clinical Coordinators to facilitate daily equipment movement for surgical procedures.

Direct the movement of equipment as needed with other ancillary operating room staff.

Perform operating room checks to ensure equipment setup is complete and aligned with the Clinical Coordinator’s case outline.

Work with Media Specialists to ensure proper equipment arrangements in the operating rooms for specific procedures.

Coordinate with the Biomedical Department to ensure equipment is in working order and arrange loaner equipment when repairs are needed, communicating issues to OR management and staff.

Follow policies, Title 22, and The Joint Commission Standards.

Provide orientation, training, and continuing education for ancillary staff and educate RN and ST staff in the use of designated equipment used in the operating room.

Assist in resolving conflicts related to equipment issues.

Assist in updating preference cards requiring equipment to prevent conflicts through Cerner/Surginet systems.

Keeps OR staff updated on current issues related to equipment needs in specific specialties.

Assist with annual budget related to equipment, supplies, and capital requirements; make recommendations to optimize resource utilization within the department.

Act as a liaison between nursing, anesthesia, OR technicians, surgeons, and other ancillary services regarding equipment-related issues.

Maintain supplies and equipment continuously, including par levels, organization, cleaning, and disposal of out-of-date items.

Participate actively in PI activities.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent

2 - 3 years of experience in the surgery field with surgical equipment

Strong organization and time management skills

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Demonstrated ability to effectively work with physicians, staff, and patients

Preferred Qualifications

Associate's degree in a related field (preferred)

Required Licenses/Certifications

Fire Life Safety Training (LA City). If no card on hire, it must be obtained within 30 days and renewed before expiration (required within LA City only).

The hourly rate range for this position is $21.00 - $33.15. When extending an offer of employment, considerations include the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, applicable laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, and external market factors.
