Overview The Animal Rescue League of Iowa currently has openings for full-time, part-time, and relief veterinarians with opportunities to work both in the shelter and clinic setting.

What You’ll Do

Conduct medical examinations, monitor animal health, and provide treatments and surgical procedures, including spay/neuter surgeries.

Advise on nutrition, preventative care, and general pet health; provide support at community outreach clinics as needed.

Maintain accurate medical records; collaborate with staff and volunteers on animal care; recommend improvements to medical processes and procedures.

Manage medical emergencies, administer medications, and provide guidance on euthanasia when appropriate.

Model compassionate handling of animals, follow safety protocols, adhere to state regulations, and uphold ARL policies and procedures.

What You Bring

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree and a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in Iowa.

Currently hold or be eligible to obtain a DEA license.

Excellent problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills; able to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.

Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.

Comfortable using Microsoft Office and performing basic mathematical calculations.

Working Conditions This role requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and spend long periods standing or sitting. Work may expose you to odors, animal waste, potentially contagious diseases, moderate noise, bites, or scratches. You must be able to function effectively in environments where animals may be fearful, ill, or recovering from trauma, and adhere closely to safety and disease control protocols.
