Staff Sensor Hardware Engineer, Radar & Radio Frequency
Tesla, Palo Alto, California, United States, 94306
Overview
Staff Sensor Hardware Engineer, Radar & Radio Frequency. The Sensing Hardware Team is seeking an electrical engineer specializing in RF or radar system design with 3+ years of industry experience. This role focuses on developing advanced radar-based in-cabin sensing technologies for safety and wellness features. You will be responsible for the overall performance of the sensing system and its features at any point in the product life cycle; serve as the owner of a given sensing system to address issues from development through deployment; understand and debug hardware and software interactions from prototyping through product launch; and manage priorities across multiple projects.
Responsibilities
Specification generation: distill sensor product requirements into constraints and actionable engineering system design discussions
Collaboration: lead cross-functional sensor design discussions with electrical, software, antenna design, EMC, reliability, thermal, and mechanical, supply chain and manufacturing teams
Architecture definition: translate sensor design discussions into design documents in the form of system block diagrams, functional and performance requirements
Design and develop RF hardware/system and/or antenna characterization for sensors
Schematic & PCB layout: review schematics and guide layout from RF perspective, perform impedance matching, bring up and validate wireless hardware
BOM definition: work with the supply chain team to ensure components meet performance, cost & manufacturing requirements
Prototyping: support early sensor prototype development to de-risk modern technologies
Validation: generate/execute the test plan that includes milestones focused on de-risking product and/or feature deployment and alignment with program timeline
Qualification: ensure hardware meets required design criteria across environments and regulations while collaborating with reliability, test and homologation teams
Production: work with manufacturing/test teams and suppliers to achieve high-volume mass production with high yield
Qualifications
Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
Deep understanding of system-level RF parameters (e.g., power, sensitivity, throughput, latency) in at least one wireless technology
Hands-on experience with RF lab test instruments
Knowledge of RF hardware design or antenna characterization; experience reviewing RF schematics and PCB layouts to ensure adherence to best practices
Debugging experience with wireless radio systems at conducted or radiated level
Knowledge of multi-radio coexistence and RF desense mitigation
Experience with Power Management for sensing hardware and knowledge of DC-DC converters, LDOs for supply management on complex boards
Proven cross-functional collaboration and leadership skills
Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, SPICE, or similar simulation and modeling tools, as well as data visualization and statistical analysis
Experience in high-volume mass production and collaboration with suppliers and contract manufacturers
Compensation & Benefits Expected Compensation: $124,000 - $240,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits. Pay offered may vary based on location and experience. Details of participation in benefit plans will be provided if an offer of employment is extended.
Benefits at day 1 include multiple medical plan options, dental and vision plans, HSA contributions, FSA options, 401(k) with employer match, Employee Stock Purchase Plans, life insurance, disability insurance, Employee Assistance Program, and paid time off
Additional voluntary benefits may include critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident insurance, and other programs
