Fellowship Description
The Georgetown Domestic Violence Clinic (DVC) hires one clinical teaching fellow/supervising attorney each year for a two-year fellowship position. Fellows receive mentorship to develop skills in litigation, teaching, and legal scholarship, with a pathway to a permanent position in law teaching (clinical or doctrinal) and exposure to public interest practice. Responsibilities
Supervise law students who represent survivors of domestic abuse in civil protection order cases in D.C. Superior Court. Teach students to develop a range of skills, including building attorney‑client relationships, acquiring litigation practice skills, exploring legal ethics, and becoming trauma‑informed, creative problem‑solvers, and effective storytellers. Help students examine psychological dynamics of intimate partner violence, systemic responses, and potential solutions beyond the legal system. Design and teach classroom seminars on topics such as child custody, professional ethics, and the dynamics of intimate partner violence. Navigate student learning challenges, help fellows develop a teaching voice, and facilitate engaging classroom discussions and exercises. Receive training and mentorship to improve lawyering and litigation skills; provide direct representation to a small number of clients experiencing family abuse, primarily outside the academic semester. Engage in legal scholarship with support from Georgetown Law faculty. Join Georgetown’s clinical teaching fellows community in a course on clinical pedagogy and participate in the Women’s Law and Public Policy Fellowship Program for collaboration on women’s rights issues. Qualifications
Preference for applicants with a background or interest in family law, domestic or sexual violence, and/or poverty law; trial experience is a plus. Admitted to a Bar at the time of application; if not admitted to the D.C. Bar, must apply for admission by waiver immediately following acceptance. Fellows are required to be available for the full-time fellowship from early July 2026 through June 2028. Fellowship Details
