Senior Accountant

The George Washington University . University Accounting, under the Office of the Comptroller, handles day-to-day operations of processing departmental journal entries, wires, remote check deposits, and reconciling and analyzing balance sheet accounts. The department files District of Columbia and Virginia Sales Tax. The mission is to ensure the accuracy and completeness of accounting data in the university’s Oracle financial system. Responsibilities
Monitor Payroll activity in the university’s primary accounts for cash receipts and disbursements, and file monthly sales tax. Analyze and reconcile Payroll cash accounts; ensure journal entries are recorded in the appropriate general ledger accounts. Maintain and balance general ledger accounts by verifying, allocating, posting, reconciling transactions, and resolving discrepancies. Annually file Unclaimed Property with DC for Accounts Payable, Student Accounts, and Benefits checks not cashed within the past 3 years, and address stale GWorld and student account credit balances. Analyze and reconcile student accounts receivables and refunds; research status and open stale checks and resolve discrepancies timely. Analyze and reconcile student health insurance premiums and vendor payments; coordinate payments and adjustments with Student Services. Prepare and file monthly Sales Tax returns for DC and VA for multiple departments. Apply knowledge of DC, VA & MD Sales Tax and Unclaimed Property laws to analyses and reporting. Prepare account analyses during closing and interact with external auditors during interim and year-end audit related to cash transactions. Review and modify Payroll Banner System Reports to improve efficiency in payroll account reconciliations. Participate in Finance projects and initiatives with Finance teammates or other departments. Share cash-related subject matter expertise through training sessions. Perform other related duties as assigned within the scope of the position. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area PLUS 2 years of relevant professional experience, or a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area. Degree must be conferred by the start date. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Preferred Qualifications
Certified Public Accountant preferred. Bachelor’s in Accounting or a business-related degree is desired. Advanced MS Excel skills (including v-lookup, pivot tables, macros) preferred. Experience with Oracle Enterprise Accounting System and Ellucian Banner Administrative System preferred. Experience in writing and maintaining Tableau reports valued. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; detail-oriented and accurate; strong organizational skills and team orientation. Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines; ability to work collaboratively at all levels of the organization. Hiring Details
