Overview

We are seeking an innovative, self-directed, ideal team player for an Electrical Engineer role in an asphalt roofing manufacturing facility. The engineer will optimize the efficiency and reliability of new and existing asphalt processing and web handling production processes, including migration of Siemens 505 series PLCs to Step 7 PLCs. This is a fast-paced, highly visible engineering position within the Engineering Department. The incumbent will work daytime shift, Monday–Friday; additional extended hours may occasionally be required, including on-call coverage. Perform all work in a safe manner, report unsafe conditions, work practices, and injuries for corrective action. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the Manufacturing Playbook and Playlist. Support and apply the Playbook/Playlist in all areas. Troubleshoot PLC and HMI programs, instrumentation, and drives on the production lines with an analytical systems-based approach. Analyze data to identify where improvements will have the most impact and manage those improvements across multiple production lines in a high-speed asphalt roofing facility. Identify gaps in automation deployment and programs; work with Plant Systems teams to implement improvements. Facilitate change management and sustainment documentation (engineering drawings, manuals, troubleshooting guides, process flow diagrams, spare parts lists). Perform electrical and controls layouts, updates, and create electrical drawings in CAD or other software. Collaborate with a cross-functional team of Engineers, Operations, and Maintenance; mentor and assist with training of controls and other plant personnel. Analyze operating machines for conformance with operational standards. Improve current manufacturing systems and reliability of electrical and controls on machinery exposed to abrasive materials. Maintain awareness of new capabilities and technologies related to controls, drives, and web handling; lead implementation when applicable. Be flexible and adaptive, thriving in a fast-changing environment and implementing solutions rapidly without cutting corners. Assume role as project manager for installation of improvement projects, including project specifications, cost-benefit analysis, and coordination with cross-functional teams. Requirements Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in an engineering field from an accredited university (Electrical, Electro-Mechanical, or Controls Engineering preferred) AND 3 years professional experience. Extensive background in PLC code development. Experience with motion control systems using VFDs and Servos (Siemens preferred). Electrical distribution troubleshooting and design experience, understanding NEC. HMI programming experience (Aveva preferred). Knowledgeable user of AutoCAD Electrical and Microsoft Office. Ability to effectively present and communicate work to plant management, peers, and maintenance/operations personnel. Apply principles of mathematics, statistics, and engineering to resolve recurring process issues. Empowered, self-directed individual capable of prioritizing workload to benefit production processes. Preferred Experience Field service engineering or technician background preferred. System integration of third-party equipment and programming. Archestra System Platform. Experience with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning applications in a manufacturing environment. Experience with process control and PID tuning. HMI programming experience (Wonderware preferred). Experience in roofing manufacturing or web process handling. Machine Vision or Vision Inspection Systems installation and programming experience. Experience with IIoT devices. Physical Requirements / Work Environment Work is divided between office and production floor. PPE required on the production floor (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, ear protection, and face covering as per guidelines). Safety is a top priority; employee is responsible for safety of self and peers. Production facility is 24/7; extended hours may be required for troubleshooting, project implementation, and training. Comp time may be provided. Temperature fluctuations and exposure to moving machinery, fumes, odors, and airborne particles. Physical ability to climb stairs/ladders, bend, kneel, crawl, and stoop; ability to inspect, repair, and maintain equipment. Lifting up to 10 pounds regularly; up to 25 pounds occasionally. May be exposed to extreme conditions and noise; respirator may be required.
