Overview
Machine Service Technician (Mechanic) 2 - Field Service. As a technician, with minimal supervision, you will diagnose and repair Caterpillar and allied equipment, with emphasis on engines, powertrains, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Experience with Cat diagnostic equipment, Cat repair tooling, rigging, and blocking equipment is essential. This role requires planning and organization to control job costs and effective communication with leads, management, and customers. Essential Functions
Analyze and diagnose equipment malfunctions. Remove and install parts, disassemble and assemble components, and test/adjust assemblies with minimal supervision. Perform Caterpillar updates as directed by Caterpillar, Inc. Analyze equipment systems and components for proper operation based on theory of design. Communicate effectively with peers, leads, and other staff. Organize a job in a logical and economical sequence. Utilize Cat Interact and Servicelink and other online tools as required. Order parts through DBS (Dealer Business System). Enter labor time daily (DBS). Complete assigned work within quoted/flat rate time. Conduct customer training in proper use of Caterpillar equipment as needed. Write service reports documenting diagnosis and repairs performed daily. Attend toolbox meetings as required. Adhere to all company policies and safety rules, including OSHA/MSHA. Guide or mentor technicians with less experience in repairs of Caterpillar machines and systems. Perform other duties as assigned. Education, Experience, And Skills Required
High school diploma or equivalent Five to eight (5-8) years of experience in repair of Caterpillar or other heavy equipment products or successful completion of Level One Technician program General knowledge of basic hand tools, air tools, precision measuring tools, laptops, diagnostic software, and cranes/rigging equipment Ability to provide accurate information to lead/supervisor for quoting Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment; manages competing demands; can adjust approach to fit the situation Must be able to obtain a passing score for crane qualification test by a Hawthorne trainer Ability to work unsupervised and as part of a team Must pass Lock Out/Tag Out & Forklift certification class provided by Hawthorne trainer Professional conduct in line with Hawthorne’s code of conduct Basic computer knowledge and ability to use service software required Valid California Driver’s License with a clean record Shop: Valid California Class C driver’s license; Field: Class B if a vehicle is assigned Furnish all hand tools required to repair, test and diagnose hydraulic, air, power train, electrical and electronic systems on Caterpillar equipment (note: some high-dollar tooling is supplied by Hawthorne) Contribute to building a positive team spirit and support goals Physical Demands
Walking and moving about on foot, often on uneven terrain Hand/arm work, use of hand and power tools Lifting up to 50 lbs daily with exertion Climbing, reaching, standing, bending, and handling Vision and hearing adequate for reading tickets, operating equipment, and safety Ability to work in varying positions, including lying under vehicles Environmental
