Operating Engineer 2 – Qualifications

Minimum: Two years of experience or training in the operation or maintenance of large stationary engines or mechanical equipment.

Special Requirement: For positions involving refrigerants, possession of an appropriate EPA refrigerant recycling and recovery certification (Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990).

Operating Engineer 1 – Qualifications

Minimum: One year of experience or training in the operation or maintenance of large stationary engines or mechanical equipment.

Special Requirement: Same EPA refrigerant recycling and recovery certification for positions involving refrigerants (Section 608).

Job Responsibilities (Operating Engineer 2)

Operate, regulate, monitor, service, and maintain ventilation, refrigeration, heating, and related machinery and equipment, including pumps and other utility systems.

Perform preventive maintenance—oil motor changes, belt and filter replacements, painting, and cleaning—on boilers, ventilation and refrigeration equipment, air conditioning machinery, generators, suction fans, pumps, and compressors.

Maintain a logbook detailing boiler and pumping equipment operation and any maintenance performed.

Start and stop pumps; fire gas or oil‑fired boilers; adjust fuel and airflow; regulate water level.

Read gauges to check water level, steam pressure, and operation of valves and auxiliary pumps.

Perform minor repairs on boilers and related equipment.

Assist skilled workers in performing major repairs.

Oversee wastewater treatment and ensure pump station maintenance.

Additional Information Level of Work: Experienced. Supervision received: General from a higher-level Operating Engineer or agency official. Supervision exercised: None. Function of Work: As above. Job Distinctions: Differ from Operating Engineer 1 by responsibility for boilers or power plants of 150 horsepower or more. Differ from Operating Engineer Master by absence of sole operator responsibility, lead‑worker duties, direct supervision, or large institution with extensive energy management system.

Salary Range: $40,914 - $73,632 (WS212).
