Responsibilities

Lead the building permit process from start to finish—reviewing plans, issuing permits, and conducting inspections for MAC and tenant projects. Ensure safety and compliance with all applicable building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire, and occupancy codes. Collaborate across departments and with external consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies to keep projects on track and up to code. Issue certificates of occupancy after confirming all requirements are met, playing a key role in bringing new spaces to life at MSP. Shape policy and streamline processes for permit applications and recordkeeping, enhancing efficiency and supporting modern construction practices at the airport. Review and interpret plans, specifications and code requirements; communicate requirements to design professionals, permit applicants, contractors and tenants to ensure understanding and compliance. Develop and maintain knowledge of MAC Design and Construction Standards; participate in changes and approvals for the standards. Assist with resolution of disputes related to building codes, nonconformance investigations, and issue resolution between MAC, contractors, and other stakeholders. Maintain accurate inspection records, coordinate with MAC Trades to complete compliance inspections, and initiate actions to correct building code violations. Stay current on new electrical, plumbing, building, heating, and ventilation materials, installation procedures, and revised code requirements. Coordinate with Airport Development to ensure construction issues are considered in design decisions. Act as a liaison for tenant build-out projects and serve as the MAC construction inspector for these projects. Provide staff expertise, prepare staff reports, and assist in budget preparation as needed. Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in solving project problems and maintaining safety and compliance. Provide effective representation of the department to the public, airport users, tenants, consultants, and contractors. Collaborate with Architects, Engineers, MAC Police and Fire, construction and building specialists to resolve problems or emergencies. Share input on optimum usage and service life of MAC pavements, infrastructure, and facilities. Support a safe working environment and contribute to continuous improvement of MAC programs.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, project management, or a related field. Six years of experience as a building official, performing building inspections, construction, and/or construction inspection management. In lieu of a degree, ten years of experience as a building official, performing building inspections, construction, and/or construction inspection management. Current Minnesota Certified Building Official Certification Current I.C.C. Building Inspector Certification or equivalent Current I.C.C. Building Plans Examiner Certification or equivalent Thorough knowledge of building codes and ADA accessibility requirements Thorough knowledge of structural principles and public safety in construction Experience multi-tasking and coordinating with various agencies to ensure timely completion and compliance Excellent written and oral communication skills Intermediate skill level in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel Valid state driver’s license and reliable transportation Ability to walk and stand for extended periods, climb ladders, and access construction sites

Desirable Requirements
