The Director Medical Staff Services provides leadership and support to the organized Medical Staff and serves as a liaison to promote communication and positive working relationships. This role establishes and maintains continuity in planning, development and implementation of standards, policies and procedures for the Medical Staff Services department, including credentialing, Bylaws, rules & regulations, fair hearing plan and allied health professional manual, medico-legal issues, quality and administrative functions. The Director oversees credentialing and privileges, and medical staff meetings to ensure effective addressing of medical staff issues and needs. The role ensures compliance and continual accreditation readiness, licensure with the Texas Department of Health and other licensing/regulatory standards related to the Medical Staff organization. The position may assume additional responsibilities as directed by senior leadership.
Responsibilities
Directs, develops and implements strategic and operational/high level projects and processes, independently or with work teams, to achieve objectives.
Oversees staff development to meet quality, service and cost objectives; manages staffing, scheduling, supervision, retention and evaluation.
Maintains department engagement and communication through regular meetings, performance appraisals, coaching, recognition and feedback.
Builds strategic relationships across areas, drives teamwork, and leads process improvements as needed.
Assists senior leadership in physician relations and services between the medical staff and the hospital to support quality care and community needs.
Develops comprehensive orientations for new physicians and allied health professionals.
Service Essential Functions
Oversees department operations and projects to ensure timely achievement of goals and high customer/patient satisfaction.
Drives service standards and participates on entity committees as a department representative.
Manages medical staff meetings and minutes, tracking attendance and maintaining records in accordance with laws and standards.
Performs Medical Staff support functions (e.g., Emergency Room Call Schedule/Pay, Committee Pay, Stark Law compliance).
Manages physician services agreements and contracts; oversees compensation-related processes.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
Ensures a safe working environment; maintains credentials and competencies per accrediting/licensing guidelines.
Optimizes department workflow and safety using lean principles and collaboration; fosters teachable moments.
Ensures compliance with policies and procedures and addresses non-compliance as needed.
Coordinates resolution of physician issues related to peer review and physician behavior.
Develops policies to operationalize Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules & Regulations, Fair Hearing Plan, and Allied Health Manual.
Maintains accreditation and licensure readiness with government/regulatory standards.
Finance Essential Functions
Develops and manages department budgets; plans for capital needs and ensures cost-effective operations.
Creates strategies to meet financial targets and staffing needs, optimizing productivity and resource use.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
Identifies innovative solutions for practice/workflow improvements; leads unit projects and task forces.
Drives change initiatives and partners with stakeholders; maintains effective performance amid organizational changes.
Leads career development discussions and updates the IDP; supports staff development.

Education
Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business administration, or related field
Master's degree preferred
Work Experience
Five years of experience in medical staff services in a similar hospital environment
Three years of supervisory/management experience required
Licenses And Certifications
Licenses and certifications - Required: N/A
Licenses and certifications - Preferred: CPCS, CPMSM, or CPHQ (NAMSS/NAHQ)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities
Extensive knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements affecting medical staff operations
Proficiency in Microsoft Office; strong presentation and facilitation skills
Understanding of Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and related policies
Professional handling of confidential information and commitment to ethical practices
Supplemental Requirements
Work Attire: Business professional
On-Call: On-call may be required during emergencies
Travel: Some travel within/around Houston area may be required
