Director Governmental Reporting – Houston, TX
Salary: $160,000 – $190,000 per year
About the Role The Director Governmental Reporting is responsible for ensuring Houston Methodist meets all internal and external financial and governmental reporting requirements. The role directs monthly net revenue and accounts receivable valuation, provides governmental policy review and research, and leads a department focused on compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, Federal and state reporting, and tax filings.

Directs, develops and implements strategic and operational projects and processes, leading highly autonomous work teams.
Manages and develops staff to meet quality, service, and cost‑effectiveness objectives, providing guidance, feedback, and performance appraisals.
Meets or exceeds departmental employee‑engagement metrics and turnover goals.
Leads regular department meetings, coaching sessions, performance reviews, and recognitions.
Builds strategic relationships across departments to achieve business goals and promotes teamwork.
Partner effectively with internal and external parties.
Service Essential Functions
Oversees department operations, project schedules, and activities to achieve goals on time.
Drives service standards to impact department/system satisfaction scores.
Prepares annual budget for presentation to the system Board of Directors.
Manages all federal tax return filing, charity reporting, and related regulations.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
Maintains a safe working environment; monitors and revises safety plans and regulatory guidelines.
Improves workflow and operations through process improvements (e.g., lean principles).
Ensures employee compliance with policies, certifications, and procedural requirements.
Recommends standard information systems and improvements to unify budget data.
Directs monthly contractual allowance reserves for patient accounts receivable.
Finance Essential Functions
Develops and manages departmental operational and capital budgets.
Optimizes productivity and resource efficiency to achieve financial targets.
Coordinates, reviews, and files corporate income tax returns and related state returns.
Reviews and files Federal and State Charity Reports.
Directs Medicare and Medicaid cost reports, audit, reopenings, and appeals.
Manages state 1115 waiver requirements.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
Identifies and implements innovative solutions for practice or workflow improvements.
Leads task forces and committees; represents Houston Methodist at professional organizations.
Addresses major changes in work responsibilities and environments, partnering with stakeholders.
Completes and updates My Development Plan; mentors staff development.
Stays current on federal and state regulations and their operational impact.
Preferred Candidates Will Have The Following
Medicare and Medicaid Cost Reporting expertise.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
Master’s degree preferred.
Work Experience
Five years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including two years in a people‑management role.
Healthcare experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
None required.
CPA (Certified Public Accountant) – State Licensure preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrates required skills and competencies; proficient in English.
Effective interpersonal communication and confidence building.
Strong leadership, critical thinking, and problem‑solving.
Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation agency requirements; stays current with industry changes.
Excellent written and oral communication, and presentation skills.
Ability to work under pressure, prioritize, and adapt.
Proficiency in spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation software.
Knowledge of Medicare cost reporting and federal tax reporting preferred.
