Overview Hearing Instrument Specialist role at University of Miami. The Department of Otolaryngology is seeking a full-time HIS to work in Miami, FL. The HIS is responsible for the identification and rehabilitation of hearing impairment, including determining the appropriateness and benefit of amplification, and providing basic audiometric testing. The HIS counsels patients regarding test results and reviews options which best meet their hearing care needs, performs hearing aid testing, selection, and fitting for all populations, and reviews pricing and sale of hearing aids as part of patient education.

Core Responsibilities

Conduct air and bone conduction threshold measurements; use pure tone masking; perform tone decay testing and Speech Discrimination tests; obtain Speech Reception Thresholds.

Establish Most Comfortable Listening Level (MCL) and determine Uncomfortable Listening Level (UCL/LDL).

Use speech masking and perform tympanometry; obtain acoustic reflexes ipsilaterally and contralaterally.

Operate the audiometer and utilize otoacoustic emission equipment (OAE); coordinate and interpret test results.

Complete patient chart notes and send written reports to referring and primary care physicians.

Counsel patients regarding test results; provide education materials and scheduling information; make recommendations regarding hearing care options; and sell appropriate hearing care products and warranties.

Provide hearing aid dispensing, including selection, fitting, ear-mold acoustics, ongoing management with follow-up, education, and patient training on device use and care.

Conduct real-ear measurements; perform functional gain testing; and perform correct programming, modifications, and acoustical adjustments.

Demonstrate and sell Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs), batteries, and other special products.

Manage the hearing aid device inventory and queue for all patient populations; perform hearing aid checks, cleaning, and repairs.

Assess clinical quality outcomes, including efficiency and productivity; maintain confidentiality per HIPAA regulations.

Participate in training sessions to stay up to date with and share knowledge of new hearing assistance devices.

Provide excellent customer service and maintain good public relations.

Adhere to University and unit-level policies and safeguard University assets.

Core Qualifications Education:

High School diploma

Certification and Licensing:

License in relevant specialty or field

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

Department Addendum

Performs independently as an HIS, providing care within the scope of practice defined by Florida statutes.

Conducts a variety of clinical tests under the supervision of a licensed audiologist.

Clinically supports audiologists to facilitate efficient patient flow.

May be required to work at one or more clinical site locations and must perform duties according to University guidelines, protocols, and processes.

Competencies include subspecialties in diagnostics and vestibular testing; these subspecialties may change at department discretion.

Dispenses hearing aids independently to patients aged 18 and older, and performs diagnostic hearing and/or balance testing under supervision, depending on assigned specialties.

Follows established clinical protocols and best practices to meet/exceed quality control, quality outcome, and efficiency metrics.

Documents all administrative items and clinical results accurately and within the required timespan to ensure patient retention and KPI monitoring.

May be required to flex to provide coverage at other clinics in the absence of a colleague.

Maintains HIS and Audiology Assistant licensure and demonstrates sufficient competency to administer hearing and balance tests as assigned.

Completes clinical and other duties as assigned, including routine audiometer and equipment checks.

Creates patient chart notes related to hearing aid dispensing services within 24 hours of encounter.

Hearing Aids

Demonstrates independence in the hearing aid clinic, within the scope of practice defined by Florida statutes.

Ensures timely access to care through management of add-on/walk-in appointments in coordination with the supervising audiologist.

Performs regular follow-ups to support patient adoption and acceptance of hearing devices.

Engages with patients regarding audiometry results related to hearing aid selection and expectations for benefit.

Takes earmold impressions using proper techniques for custom couplers and/or hearing devices.

Other Specialties (supervised by a licensed audiologist)

Conducts diagnostic hearing and balance testing procedures under the direction of the supervising audiologist.

Prepares and positions patients for testing while ensuring safety and quality standards.

Communicates technical observations to supervisor for evaluation.

Supports clinic workflows and collaborates with clinical staff to serve patients of all ages; does not interpret, diagnose, or provide care recommendations; refers questions to the supervising audiologist.

Department Specific Qualifications

High School diploma

Florida Audiology Assistant License

Florida Hearing Aid Specialist License

Minimum 1 year of clinical audiology experience; bilingual preferred
