Corrections Officer Washington County, located in West Bend Wisconsin, is seeking a full‑time Corrections Officer for the Washington County Jail.

Under the direction of the Corrections Administrator, Lieutenant, and Shift Sergeant, the officer will supervise the care and custody of inmates, maintain security, and ensure daily operations run smoothly.

Position Summary Maintain discipline and enforce rules and regulations in a secure environment.

Prepare reports, monitor inmate appointments, conduct safety checks, and provide a rehabilitative influence to inmates while supporting the overall mission of the County.

Duties & Responsibilities

Supervise and care for inmates in County detention facilities (adult & juvenile).

Ensure safety, security, and sanitation of all inmates at all times.

Provide a positive rehabilitative influence within Department guidelines.

Maintain discipline and enforce rules through effective communication.

Employ force and trained security tactics to quell disturbances and maintain discipline.

Prepare and present written and oral reports as required.

Receive, book, and escort inmates to cells, dormitories, or assigned areas.

Maintain detailed daily jail activity reports and monitor scheduled court and medical appointments.

Conduct initial intake verification of physical and health condition.

Perform wanted/warrant checks, submit fingerprint cards, file disposition forms, and notify appropriate offices.

Collect DNA samples for state crime laboratory transmission.

Conduct inmate releases as ordered by the court.

Perform regular security checks and document findings.

Document inmate behavior and maintain accurate computer files.

Inspect and search inmates for cleanliness, contraband, and order.

Investigate all fire and door alarms in secure areas and perform evacuation procedures.

Administer basic first-aid and CPR as needed.

Maintain strict security Standard Operating Procedures for all personnel entering secure areas.

Perform general housekeeping, maintenance, and inspection of facility areas.

Supervise cleanliness, laundry, and uniform changes as per SOP.

Issue uniforms, bedding, supplies, and assist with food service operations.

Distribute jail commissary, verify signatures on receipts, and inventory operating supplies.

Ensure constitutional rights of inmates are protected at all times.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Citizen of the United States.

19 years of age or older.

High School Diploma or equivalent.

No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.

Maintain good physical condition with weight proportioned to height.

Valid Wisconsin driver’s license with vision 20/20.

Ability to distinguish colors and detect varying sound levels.

Visible tattoos must be in good taste and not offensive while on duty or in representation.

Pass occupational lift test (minimum 75 lbs), audiogram, and drug screening before employment.

Preferred, but not mandatory

Associate’s Degree or 60 college credits in Criminal Justice or related field.

Two or more years as a Corrections Officer or similar position in a County Jail, State Correctional Facility, Federal Correctional Facility, or two years of military experience with Veteran status.

Training Provided

Basic Jail Officer Training – 200‑hour state certification program.

Co‑located Juvenile Detention Training – 24‑hour state certification program.

Twelve (12) weeks on‑the‑job field training.

Annual in‑service training to maintain state certification – minimum 24 hours annually in topics such as CPR, Suicide Prevention, Professional Communication, Principles of Subject Control, TASER Certification, etc.

Merit Based Salary

Starting annual: $63,211.20 – $75,051.20 (full‑time), hourly pay $30.39 – $34.64.

Salary reviewed annually; commensurate with experience.

Interaction Significant interaction with other law‑enforcement agencies, County Departments, the District Attorney’s Office, the court system, and the general public.

Essential Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of detention facility operations, security programs, regulations, and treatment of inmates. Ability to handle complex incidents within legal and procedural guidelines, develop working relationships, prepare accurate reports, and maintain physical and mental endurance. Must meet physical demands, including strength, stamina, and ability to work in confined spaces.

Working Environment and Physical Demands Work is performed 24/7 in a secure jail setting. Rotating schedules include day, night, weekends, and holidays. Requires physical strength to perform security and emergency duties, the ability to function in confined spaces, and readiness to respond to emergencies at all times.
