POLICE OFFICER - Part Time at Valparaiso University. Performs a variety of routine and complex police/public safety duties including preventative patrol, community policing, investigations, traffic control, event and site security, emergency response, and other university safety functions on campus. Major Responsibilities
Patrol the Valparaiso University Campus, and nearby city streets, on foot, bicycle, ATV, or in a police vehicle to preserve law and order, deter crime, aid citizens, and report dangerous situations to the campus community. Answer calls for service, investigate complaints impartially. Investigate crimes and campus rules violations; legally arrest persons or issue citations; participate in prosecutions or campus judicial processes; collaborate with the campus community to reduce crime. Provide campus policing services as needed (including safety programming, Clery reporting, escorts, animal control, medical and fire assistance, motorist assists, and other services). Perform security protection and traffic control for events/activities on and near campus (including uniform and undercover details). Complete all required reports accurately and timely. Required Knowledge and Skills
Hold an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy certification or equivalent law enforcement academy/experience. Ability to adapt to changes and perform duties in life-threatening or high-stress environments. Minimum of a high school education. Maintain a current driver’s license. Strong logical and/or critical thinking to solve problems and interpret instructions. Effective communication in English, both verbally and in writing, with the police department, campus community, and the public. Operation of tools and equipment. Ability to learn applicable laws, ordinances, campus policies, rules and SOPs; maintain good physical condition; establish and maintain working relationships; exercise sound judgment; follow verbal and written instructions; learn campus and nearby geography. Ability to sustain ongoing training and expand skills; exercise sound judgment under stressful/dangerous circumstances. Ability to evaluate options, including life-and-death decisions. Ability to deal with personal danger, exposure to armed/dangerous persons, hazards, emergencies, and hazardous materials. Willingness to work holidays, weekends, and shift work. To protect life and property; enforce Federal Law, Indiana State Statutes, and Valparaiso University policy, rules, and regulations. This may include investigations, detentions, restraints, arrests, temporary commitments to health facilities, and life-or-death decisions in the line of duty. Administrative decisions are made by the VUPD command staff. Tools & Equipment Used

Valparaiso University Police Department is currently accepting applications for a Part-Time Police Officer. The position is uniform patrol. Applicants must be certified police officers in Indiana or have completed another state academy transferable to Indiana; must perform all patrol duties, work all shifts, weekends, and holidays, and maintain a valid driver's license. This position has the opportunity to become Full Time in the future All offers of employment are contingent upon clear results of a thorough background check, which may include criminal history, motor vehicle records, prior employment verification, and references.
