Overview

Health Services Manager (HSM) with the Core Laboratories at the Renton Central Lab, part of UW Medicine – Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP). The HSM will oversee the technical clinical operations of the Reference Core Laboratories in Seattle and Renton, including analytical and post-analytical automation, manual and specialized testing across Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, and related sections. What You’ll Do

Oversee and supervise staff, including contract classified staff, and provide oversight for regulatory requirements, quality assurance standards, preventative maintenance, safety protocols, IT system functionality, and support to academic programs and training. Collaborate with leadership across DLMP and UW Medicine (e.g., Harborview Medical Center, UWMC-Montlake, UWMC-Northwest) to ensure clinical excellence, optimize staff productivity, and uphold laboratory compliance standards. Manage and lead the technical operations of the Core Laboratories, including automation and testing workflows across multiple disciplines. Work Schedule

100% FTE Day shift Onsite at Renton and/or Seattle facilities Responsibilities

Set goals for the laboratory using Objectives and Key Results (OKR) processes, including divisional goals, policies, and strategic planning to meet future demands. Drive change and foster innovations and improvements in laboratory function using new technologies with direct application to laboratory-based diagnoses. Consult with Administrative and Medical Directors of Laboratory Operations to address activities, needs, and problems with resolution. Ensure proper and efficient laboratory operations; design, develop, and direct implementation of strategic initiatives. Develop and implement department and division lab policies; ensure policies and procedures are clear and understood by faculty and staff. Evaluate equipment needs; manage equipment and supplies selection; support negotiations of contracts and pricing for equipment and services. Ensure compliance with all federal/state regulations and accrediting bodies; oversee safety information, disaster drill procedures, and MSDS manuals. Represent the laboratory with other healthcare personnel when required and resolve service-related problems with other departments. Direct or delegate resolution of quality control standards, proficiency testing, and preventive maintenance programs. Coordinate clinical laboratory rotations for students and trainees; may prepare and present lectures to residents and students. Collaborate with other Laboratory Supervisors/Managers on joint concerns; prepare presentations for staff, students, and professional meetings. Assume additional duties as assigned by Faculty, Department Administrators, or Department Chairperson. Supervisory

Maintain a competent technical staff and high-quality laboratory testing and training; coordinate continuing education and in-service education for staff. Develop training procedures and checklists; interview, hire, orient, and train new employees; maintain training documentation and required competencies. Delegate responsibilities to optimize staff time, skill, and expertise without compromising quality of testing. Assess and adjust staffing based on workload and budget; plan schedules; review time records; manage vacation and leave requests. Evaluate employee performance; provide feedback; address performance issues; enforce compliance and billing policies. IT Management

Consult with Analytics and Laboratory Information System (LIS) teams to implement changes and improvements; oversee automation and data accuracy. Maintain knowledge of LIS, bioinformatic pipelines, and laboratory workflow software; ensure downstream systems display reports in regulatory formats. Use LIS and other information systems to ensure consistent performance across the team and alignment with laboratory goals. What You’ll Need

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, science, or other relevant fields. ASCP (or equivalent) certification in Medical Laboratory Science; or certification with a specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory divisions. Six (6) years of progressively responsible clinical technologist experience, including three (3) years in a leadership or supervisory role (or equivalent). Experience with wet bench procedures, instrumentation, quality management/assurance, CAP proficiency and accreditation guidelines. Proven track record of effective management of teams to meet goals and deadlines; experience with Change Management. Extensive knowledge of laboratory test/system validations and data management; demonstrated process improvement experience. Desired Qualifications

Master’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent field. Lead/Supervisor/Manager experience in core lab areas: Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis. Strong knowledge of instrumentation across chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, and microbiology. 5+ years of Lab Manager experience; experience in core lab or reference lab setting. Experience with Lean Management or Six Sigma; Total Lab Automation exposure in a reference lab or centralized core laboratory. What We Offer
