Overview

Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee/1, HMC Hematology at University of Washington. This role is with the UW Medicine – Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA, at Harborview Medical Center. The lab performs routine hematology and coagulation testing, as well as specialty testing in circulating tumor cell, bleeding, and thrombosis workups and red cell disorders. This is a busy lab with opportunities for learning from faculty and residents on current treatments and diagnostic testing for hematology and coagulation disorders. Work Schedule

80% FTE Thursday and Friday (Day shift) Sunday and Monday (Evening shift) Responsibilities

Perform routine clinical testing in the Hematology/Coagulation Laboratory. This may include routine coagulation, automated cell counts, manual cell counts, differential/morphology, bone marrows, circulating tumor cell testing, special coagulation, red cell disorder testing, information processing, quality control, blood gas, or urinalysis. Operate, maintain, troubleshoot and perform corrective maintenance on laboratory equipment, including sophisticated computerized instruments requiring interpretative knowledge, with supervision as required. Complete patient and quality control procedures within defined time limits, coordinate multiple procedures, prioritize STAT requests, and collaborate to ensure timely testing. Investigate specimen collection or handling problems to assure quality and timeliness of results; document actions and findings. Understand theory and physiological importance of each test; correlate abnormal results with pathologic and physiologic states to determine validity. Identify causes of problems (e.g., patient variables or interfering substances). Take appropriate action on specimens with critical values; document actions and findings as needed. Perform daily quality control and evaluate QC statistics; institute corrective actions when QC results exceed tolerance limits. Teach and train students and new employees; conduct competency assessments and evaluations as required. Perform analysis on CAP and other proficiency testing materials when requested; verify reagent quality. Maintain awareness of supply stock and inform lead technologist before depletion. Demonstrate working knowledge of laboratory information system software. Assist in development or evaluation of new procedures and instruments; perform special projects as assigned. May be required to perform venipunctures and to prepare/process samples for transport and/or testing. What You’ll Need

Requirements for an MLS Trainee : Accredited bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience AND Eligible to take the MLS or categorical certification examination from the ASCP within 18 months from date of hire. Failure to attain certification within 18 months may result in termination. Requirements For An MLS 1 : Accredited bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience AND Current MLS certification with ASCP or equivalent certifying organization OR certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division AND One year of experience as an MLS Trainee (up to one year of externship may count toward experience).
