Job Description Summary The Specimen Management Consultant is responsible for selling the consumable product line— including blood collection, safety phlebotomy, transfer devices, accessories, and other consumable items—to hospitals and reference laboratories within the assigned territory.

Job Summary BD Life Sciences – Integrated Diagnostic Systems, part of BD’s Vacutainer brand, provides specimen management and patient safety systems. The Specimen Management Consultant in Michigan will sell existing and new BD IDS consumable products to hospitals, health systems, reference laboratories, and the U.S. healthcare market. The role assesses client needs, places orders, provides in‑service support, and maintains the existing business portfolio. Applicants must lead incremental conversion opportunities from initial targeting through evaluation and drive sales to consistently meet or exceed quotas. The consultant will collaborate with local distributor branches and utilize available sales support to drive BD’s growth.

Responsibilities Include

Lead with a focused growth mindset to deliver for customers and drive profitable growth.

Conduct daily sales calls to introduce novel solutions through clinical insights, quality products, and studies/tools.

Develop new business markets where opportunities exist.

Actively seek to convert accounts where competitive products are currently used.

Work effectively with BD customer‑facing associates (Account Executives, Product Specialists, Associate Territory Managers, National Accounts, Strategic Account Vice Presidents) as well as BD’s distribution partners.

Service hospitals, reference labs, and alternative locations within a given territory.

Complete all customer service activities—including product in‑servicing, technical follow‑up, and ensuring a smooth supply chain and delivery.

Achieve an assigned territorial sales quota and attain market share goals for particular product lines.

Maintain a high level of technical and market expertise and educate the market on proper utilization and acceptance of BD products.

Keep abreast of changing market activities and product enhancements.

Ensure distributor partners are kept informed about IDS products, prices, promotions, and policies.

Act as the product expert driving growth of the Specimen Management portfolio.

Develop, document, and drive the customer buying process through full utilization of a territory and strategic account sales plan involving multiple stakeholders and buyers.

Call on prospective customers, create demand, communicate medical and patient outcome benefits, deliver product information and demonstrations, and prepare proposals and quotes within company guidelines.

Maintain all territory account data and forecast management through Salesforce (SFDC).

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) from a four‑year college or university. MBA a plus.

3–5+ years of experience as a medical device sales professional.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills.

Demonstrated successful sales track record, solid negotiation skills, understanding of buyer/decision‑maker types, and effective selling, listening, and presentation abilities.

Experience managing resources, conducting pre‑call planning, and prioritizing and segmenting accounts.

Willing to travel in the field 75% of the time.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

Familiarity with Salesforce software.

Valid state‑issued driver’s license with a 3‑year consecutive driving history that meets BD’s auto safety standards.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience calling on Infection Prevention, Med/Surg, Occupational Health, Nursing, OR, and Lab.

Experience selling on value in a medical sales capacity.

Experience maintaining Integrated Business Plans (IBPs) to ensure attainment of territorial goals.

Former clinical experience preferred.

Strong track record of building and maintaining relationships with key customers and opinion leaders.
