The Specimen Management Consultant is responsible for selling the consumable product line (including blood collection, safety phlebotomy, transfer devices, accessories, etc.) to hospitals and reference labs within the assigned territory.

The BD Life Sciences – Integrated Diagnostic Systems unit is a pioneer in evacuated blood collection systems and preanalytical improvement processes. Under the BD Vacutainer brand, we provide specimen management and patient safety systems to hospitals and reference labs.
In this role, the Specimen Management Consultant (SMC) will sell BD IDS consumable products—including blood collection, safety phlebotomy, transfer devices, accessories, and more—to hospitals, health systems, reference laboratories, and the U.S. healthcare market segment. The candidate will assess client needs, order products, service, and maintain the existing business portfolio. The goal is to lead conversion opportunities from targeting through evaluation and drive sales to meet or exceed quota, working with local distributor branches and sales support teams.
Responsibilities Include
Lead with a focused growth mindset delivering for customers and driving profitable growth.
Conduct daily sales calls to introduce novel solutions through clinical insights, quality products, and studies/tools.
Develop new business markets where opportunities exist.
Actively seek to convert accounts where competitive products are used.
Work effectively with BD customer‑facing associates and distribution partners to support growth and long‑term retention.
Service hospitals, reference labs, and alternative locations within the territory.
Complete all customer service activities including product in‑servicing, follow‑up on technical questions, and ensuring a smooth supply chain and delivery.
Attain an assigned territorial sales quota and achieve market share goals.
Maintain a high level of technical and market expertise and educate the market on proper utilization of BD products.
Keep abreast of changing market activities and product enhancements.
Ensure distributor partners are informed about IDS products, prices, promotions, and policies.
Recognize as the product expert driving growth of the Specimen Management portfolio.
Develop, document, and drive the customer buying process through a territory and strategic account sales plan.
Call on prospective customers, create demand, communicate medical and patient outcome benefits, and deliver product demos and proposals within company guidelines.
Maintain territory account data and forecast management through Salesforce.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) from a four‑year college or university; MBA a plus.
3–5+ years as a medical device sales professional.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
Successful sales track record, solid negotiation skills, understanding of buyer and decision‑maker types, and effective selling, listening, and presentation skills.
Experience managing sales processes, pre‑call planning, and prioritizing/segmenting accounts.
Willingness to travel 75 % of the time.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and familiarity with Salesforce.
Valid state‑issued driver’s license with 3 years of driving history and meeting BD’s auto safety standards.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience calling on Infection Prevention, Med/Surg, Occupational Health, Nursing, OR, and Lab.
Experience selling on value in a medical sales capacity.
Experience maintaining Integrated Business Plans to ensure attainment of territory goals.
Former clinical experience is preferred.
Strong relationships with key customers and opinion leaders.
