Overview Instructor - Heavy Equipment Operator Program at Center for Employment Training. Under the supervision of the Center Director, the Heavy Equipment Operator Program Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality, hands-on training and classroom instruction to students. The instructor will deliver curriculum that meets industry standards, assess student progress, and ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines in program competencies including Safety and Orientation to the Trade, Basic Operation, Class A CDL Training, Forklifts, Loaders, Backhoes, Dump Trucks, Basic Computer Skills, and Job Preparedness.
Responsibilities Provide direct instruction using a variety of techniques (lecture, small group, hands-on training) and integrate the use of technology, equipment, tools, and materials as appropriate.
Develop lesson plans that integrate academic and occupational competencies and, as needed, VESL support, knowledge, and attitudes.
Demonstrate effective teaching methods to engage all students and utilize digital tools and resources to enhance training.
Prepare written materials and handouts that are descriptive and organized.
Deliver job preparation instruction including resume writing, interviewing techniques, and job retention.
Conduct program orientation sessions for prospective and new applicants.
Maintain a professional, organized, and safe learning environment in the classroom and shop.
Model professional behavior, manage student behavior, and interact positively with students, co-workers, and supervisors.
Conduct individual advising sessions, motivate students, and promote self-help attitudes and attendance.
Evaluate student progress against established standards and criteria.
Coordinate guest speakers and industry tours to enhance employment opportunities for students.
Maintain professional relations with the technical advisory committee and collaborate with staff to address student and program needs.
Maintain confidential attendance records and student files in compliance with federal and state privacy laws.
Utilize software to analyze data, prepare training materials, and verify statistics.
Research, evaluate, select, and order instructional materials and equipment; manage inventory.
Assist with planning special projects and program events; participate in student recruitment and CET initiatives.
Maintain ongoing professional development in teaching, safety, and related areas; participate in staff trainings.
Adhere to safety standards and conduct regular inspections of work areas and equipment; report hazards if identified; participate in safety drills.
Respond as campus security authority during safety, security, or disaster situations as assigned.
Perform other program-related duties as required.
Qualifications Knowledge of modern Heavy Equipment Operation technology and CDL requirements.
Knowledge of principles of student advising and training methods.
Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate training and program goals.
Knowledge of computer operations and software (word processing, databases, spreadsheets).
Knowledge of current safety standards in classroom/shop and heavy equipment environments.
Sensitivity to a multicultural student population.
Ability to work under pressure, exercise flexibility, act independently, and maintain confidentiality regarding students.
Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare and present reports.
Ability to analyze system reports for accuracy and compliance with performance standards; plan and execute corrective actions as needed.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships; identify problems and develop creative solutions.
Pre-employment drug test and random drug screening requirements for students and instructor.
Two-plus years of experience as a heavy equipment operator on construction sites; valid California Class A or B license and medical certificate.
Educational/experience substitutions: completion of specific Heavy Equipment Operations or related courses may substitute for up to six months of experience.
Experience operating backhoes, skid steers, excavators, loaders, and dump trucks.
Ability to work with diverse populations and ensure safe, effective training.
