Job Overview
Job ID: 33472. Agency: Department of Corrections - South Dakota Women’s Prison, located in Pierre, SD. Salary: $30.00 to $33.00 per hour, depending on experience. Pay Grade: GI. Closing Date: Open Until Filled. Position: Full‑time Corrections Lieutenant – enforcement of Department of Corrections policies and correctional institution procedures, scheduling and supervising correctional personnel, and controlling and monitoring inmate activities to maintain security and safety for offenders and employees.
Key Responsibilities
Schedule correctional staff for all shifts to ensure the security of the facility and safety of employees and offenders.
Enforce Department of Corrections policies, institutional IA's, and procedures.
Determine appropriate action in emergency situations and in security breakdowns.
Supervise subordinate staff to ensure objectives of the work unit are met, including conducting performance reviews and completing performance documents.
Interview staff, provide training and work direction, and approve leave requests.
Address staff problems; recommend disciplinary action; conduct investigations and evaluate findings.
Maintain security by inspecting all posts for appropriate staffing and reviewing officers’ reports on offenders and offender activities.
Keep a daily, detailed log of institutional activities; authorise and direct offender counts.
Coordinate searches of inmate property for contraband; arbitrate disputes among offenders and staff.
Initiate drills and exercises, provide staff training, and manage the facility Point of Entry (POE) to ensure proper processing of metal detector checks and contraband searches.
Direct offender movement into and out of the facility to ensure compliance with operational procedures; process new inmates admitted to the facility and receive personal property, maintaining records of transactions.
Authorise and plan transportation of offenders, verify offenders at the completion of their sentences for release/discharge, and may serve as a Disciplinary Hearing Officer.
Investigate situations involving offender violations to aid in the disciplinary hearing process; act as initial commander in emergency situations.
Work with and care for a K9 and its vehicle; search offender living areas for contraband; prepare reports of findings.
Participate in administrative tasks to support efficient management of the facility and conduct rounds in all areas during shifts, completing appropriate logs and daily shift briefings.
Perform other work as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge Of:
Department of Corrections policies and institutional operations; English grammar, spelling, and punctuation; attitudes, problems, and behavior of incarcerated individuals; methods for controlling and supervising inmates; extensive knowledge of the Use of Force policy and effective supervision.
Ability To:
Interpret and apply department policies and institutional post orders, assign and direct work, promote teamwork, model a positive role, establish effective relationships with offenders, staff, subordinate employees and public/private agencies, analyze situations, conduct investigations, manage emergencies, maintain attendance, maintain confidentiality, operate firearms and restraints.
Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Three (3) years of progressively responsible corrections experience, including at least one (1) year in a supervisory role (Sergeant or higher); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience Criterion:
Direct service to offenders in custody/control, teaching, social work, nursing, food service, maintenance, or supervised offenders in program implementation. Entry‑level or clerical support experience does not meet the minimum qualifications.
Conditions Of Employment
Pass all modules of South Dakota Department of Corrections Basic Training (English reading, competency assessments, and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics and firearms/armed transport).
Possess the physical ability to complete Defensive Tactics: lift arms above head, kick, perform controlled takedowns, and use non‑lethal force.
Work 12‑hour rotating shifts, including holidays and weekends; remain at scene during assault or restraint situations.
Use reasonable judgement, maintain confidentiality, and transport contraband appropriately.
Undergo TB screening and a background investigation. Offer conditional upon drug screening and abuse/neglect screening.
Additional Information This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08. Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a drug screening and abuse/neglect screening. The State of South Dakota does not sponsor work visas.
