$23.97 - $39.61 / hour The Teacher is responsible for the care and education of a group of children as part of a teaching team. The Teacher plans and implements the Education Component objectives of the Performance Standards. The Teacher promotes the mission of ABCD Head Start & Children’s Services by communicating this mission to staff, families and the community. This position must comply with all applicable federal, state and local laws, regulations, standards and policies, including those of the federal Administration for Children and Families (ACF), the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC), IDEA, DESE, Chapter 766, BFEN and ABCD, Inc. Head Start and Children’s Services policies and procedures. All personnel who are paid to care for, or work with, children are mandated by law to report suspected child abuse and neglect to the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF). The responsibilities of a particular position may support both Early Head Start and Head Start depending on the assignment. The specific funding allocation will be documented on the payroll authorization or change of status form. All communications are potentially sensitive and are subject to Head Start policy on confidentiality.
Essential Duties
Teaching Practices Provide infants and toddlers with a joyful, nurturing, safe, healthy, individualized environment and experiences that support social, intellectual, physical, and emotional development appropriate to their age and development. Balance between individual and small group activities to enhance development and learning. Offer open-ended exploration, teacher-directed activities, structured activities and sensory-based play to foster curiosity, engagement, reasoning and problem solving. Provide care such as diapering, toileting, feeding, dressing and hygiene to foster emotional development and independence. Supervise classroom volunteers to support developmentally appropriate learning activities.
Job Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Integrate educational aspects of Head Start components by developing health, safety, nutrition, dental health and family learning opportunities. Involve parents in educational aspects to improve understanding of child development, especially for infants and toddlers. Proficiency with Microsoft Office; ability to use other database systems as required. Professional conduct and strong interpersonal skills; ability to work cooperatively on a teaching team with staff and families. Bilingual ability where appropriate. Knowledge and sensitivity to the educational and socioeconomic needs of the children and families served; ability to work with a culturally diverse low-income population.
Observation, Planning and Documentation
Ensure individualized, high-quality educational programming; participate in screening and educational assessment of children. Develop long- and short-term goals using diagnostic evaluations; create developmentally appropriate lesson plans and individualized activities. Implement IFSP goals for all children with special needs; conduct daily observations; maintain records and communications with parents. Participate in team meetings; conduct a minimum of two home visits per family per year; at least four Parent/Teacher conferences per year; arrange periodic field trips.
Professionalism
Promote the mission of ABCD Head Start & Children’s Services; communicate the program’s mission to staff, families and the community. Engage in ongoing professional development; maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
Additional duties & tasks
Attend meetings as necessary. Maintain EEC requirements including staff-to-child ratios and classroom supervision. Perform related duties or as required by state or federal laws; report to the Program Director on employment terms and center operations.
Physical Environmental Demands & Conditions
Engage in physical activities such as lifting and moving infants and toddlers, supervising during naptime, and responding to emergencies to ensure safety. Attend to the needs of children with disabilities; move equipment and furniture as needed.
Education & Experience
Teacher 1 ($23.97/hr):
High school diploma or equivalent. Active Child Development Associate Credential with an Infant and Toddler endorsement or EEC Infant/Toddler Lead Teacher certification with experience teaching infants/toddlers required. EEC Infant/Toddler Teacher certification preferred. Bilingual in a language spoken by families served by ABCD preferred. Teacher 2 ($28.62/hr):
Associate’s degree with training in early childhood development focusing on infant and toddler development; experience teaching infants/toddlers. EEC Infant/Toddler Teacher certification preferred. Bilingual preferred. Teacher 3 ($35.20/hr):
Bachelor’s degree in early childhood development with focus on infant/toddler development; experience teaching infants/toddlers. EEC Infant/Toddler Teacher certification preferred. Bilingual preferred. Teacher 4 ($39.61/hr):
Master’s degree in early childhood development with focus on infant/toddler development; experience teaching infants/toddlers. EEC Infant/Toddler Teacher certification preferred. Bilingual preferred.
