X-Ray Technologist Student – MUSC Health
Job Summary:
Provides healthcare services by applying x‑ray energy for diagnostic purposes. Performs limited radiographic procedures authorized by state law, generating images for interpretation by licensed practitioners. Approaches patients with a demeanor consistent with medical ethics and provides essential patient care during all procedures.

Work Hours 12 scheduled weekly hours, hourly pay, Health‑01 grade.
Job Responsibilities
Perform limited radiographic procedures as authorized by state law, producing quality diagnostic images.
Student technologists are not permitted to perform exams in the emergency department, operating room, or with portable or fluoroscopic radiographic equipment.
Assist the supervising technologist with patient flow, radiation safety, and quality assurance of equipment.
Prepare patients for imaging studies, including aseptic technique, positioning, EKG lead placement, and documentation of patient clinical history.
Escort patients to waiting areas or patient rooms, monitor patient areas with a Geiger counter, and complete required paperwork.
Operate radiographic equipment and adjust exposure factors as needed to obtain optimal images.
Demonstrate safe patient handling across all age groups, including immobilization when necessary.
Respond to acute and emergency situations, providing assistance under the direction of the supervising technologist or RN, and applying restraints if instructed.
Communicate observations about patient behavior or symptoms to the supervising technologist/RN accurately and promptly, while respecting patient rights, privacy, and confidentiality.
Success Criteria
Students may perform diagnostic radiographic procedures limited to the following anatomical regions: Chest (excluding breast), Abdomen (non‑contrast procedures only), and skeletal structures (upper & lower extremities, limited spine, skull, and sinuses).
Ability to obtain and interpret patient information to meet individual patient needs, and apply knowledge appropriately during patient care.
Recognizes and responds to acute and emergency situations, providing ongoing assistance to patients under the direction of supervising technologist or RN.
Demonstrates respect for patient rights, privacy, and confidentiality.
Minimum Training and Education • Enrolled as a Second‑Year Radiology student in an accredited college and eligible for SCRQSA license. • Temporary certification as a Limited Practice Radiographer‑General required before completing general orientation. • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Licensure and Certifications • Current Basic Life Support (BLS). • Eligibility for SCRQSA license.
Physical Requirements Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, working indoors and outdoors, and from elevated or confined spaces. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs unassisted, perform repetitive hand and wrist motions, utilize both legs for balance, and reach overhead. Certain tasks require frequent or infrequent bending, twisting, squatting, and so forth as described in detail in the full role profile.
