Assistant Attorney General – Corrections Division, Tumwater
The Washington State Attorney General’s Office is seeking an Assistant Attorney General to serve in the Corrections Division. The successful candidate will represent the Department of Corrections (DOC) in civil rights, habeas corpus, sentencing, and other civil litigation matters.
Key Responsibilities
Draft pleadings, motions, and briefs in civil matters in state and federal courts, including appeals.
Manage discovery and filing of post‑sentence petitions on behalf of DOC in the Washington State Court of Appeals pursuant to RCW 9.94A.589(7).
Appear in court for motions practice, trials, and appellate arguments.
Work with Community Corrections Officers to prosecute community supervision violations at hearings held throughout the state.
Collaborate with professional staff to meet litigation deadlines and achieve goals.
Investigate claims and gather evidence in partnership with DOC employees.
Communicate with incarcerated individuals and opposing counsel regarding claims and litigation against the State.
Qualifications
Juris Doctor from an ABA‑accredited law school or completion of the WSBA Rule 6 Law Clerk Program.
License to practice law in Washington State (or active pursuit of admission by motion).
At least 3–5 years of civil or criminal litigation experience, with a strong work ethic and can‑do attitude.
Excellent judgment, superior communication and analytical skills.
Ability to multitask and independently manage a robust caseload with appropriate supervision.
Working knowledge of state and federal civil procedure rules.
Commitment to continual professional growth and dedication to public service.
