Chief Engineer

to join our team at

Britton Budd Apartments , a 173‑unit affordable housing community located in

Chicago, IL .

In this role you will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment, including HVAC systems and pumps, at the property. This role involves planning, organizing, and directing various projects related to property maintenance, ensuring that all systems are functioning properly and that team members are trained and compliant with safety regulations. The Chief Engineer will also conduct inspections, manage resources, and assist in budget development for maintenance‑related costs.

The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM. On‑call availability is required. The selected candidate will need to complete Local 1 Union training upon joining the team; this is a union position and will be eligible for benefits provided by the union. Pay rate for this position is $34.51 per hour.

Responsibilities

Maintain all mechanical equipment including HVAC and pumps.

Plan, organize, and direct a variety of projects and activities related to maintenance and repair of the property.

Effectively allocate resources, including team members and supplies, to the building to ensure that performance benchmarks are met.

Review practices and priorities of maintenance and repair at the property on a daily basis.

Assist team members with ongoing preventive maintenance plan at the property.

Ensure that maintenance and janitorial team members are trained and competent in their job duties.

Ensure that building systems are in proper working condition.

Assist in the development of specifications for maintenance and vendor repair contracts.

Ensure that there is a sufficient inventory of supplies and materials at the building.

Assist with cleaning tasks as needed and oversee that all cleaning duties are completed to standard.

Ensure that maintenance and janitorial team members adhere to OSHA requirements and implement safety procedures.

Conduct weekly/daily inspections of the property, noting deficiencies and assigning team members with proposed plans of action.

Provide maintenance‑related costs for the development of operating budgets.

Attend trainings and meetings to maintain current knowledge of legal codes and requirements.

Ensure that sites are inspected and remain in compliance with city and state regulations, as well as health and safety requirements.

Provide technical expertise, information and assistance to the Regional Manager in the formulation, development and implementation of policies and procedures.

Responsible for maintaining an accurate daily timekeeping record.

Responsible for maintaining accuracy of and documentation within Building System Log.

Perform wellness checks on residents during extreme weather.

Requirements

Vocational or technical training.

3–5 years of related work experience.

Ability to complete site‑required training.

Strong working knowledge of planning, organization and direction of maintenance and repair activities.

Ability to supervise and evaluate the performance of team members.

Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

Excellent customer service skills.

Experience with computer systems, particularly Microsoft Office.

Ability to work with a diverse group of people and personalities.

Ability to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Ability to direct the maintenance of a variety of reports and files related to assigned operations and activities.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree.

Previous maintenance technician experience.

Basic plumbing and electrical repair knowledge.
