Role Description
This is a full-time on-site role for a Senior Estimator - Structural Steel at our headquarters in Gilbert, AZ. The Senior Estimator will be responsible for evaluating project specifications and drawings, accurately estimating the cost of materials and labor, generating comprehensive bid proposals, and coordinating with project managers and clients. The role also involves attending pre-bid meetings, maintaining bid records, and ensuring compliance with relevant industry standards and regulations.
Functional Accountabilities
Review drawings, specifications, and scope of work to develop comprehensive estimates relative to S&H Steel’s capabilities.
Prepare detailed take-offs for materials, labor, and equipment.
Identify risks, contingencies, and value engineering opportunities during the bid process.
Track bid progress and follow up on submitted bids.
Ensure timely and accurate submission of bids and proposals.
Contribute to maintaining an overall department win rate.
Ensure estimate accuracy within 5%, limiting missed scope or unforeseen costs.
Maintain intimate knowledge of project bid and effectively communicate/handoff all relevant information (drawings, addendums, specifications, correspondences, etc.) to detailers and internal team members upon award.
Process Improvement
Assist in improving and implementing estimating processes, tools, and methodologies to increase efficiency and accuracy.
Support adoption of best practices while staying updated with industry trends and advancements.
Cost Control & Analysis
Participate in post-project reviews and contribute to process adjustments based on lessons learned.
Experience
Minimum 5 years of experience in structural steel estimating or a related field.
Proven competency with large and complex project estimates.
Technical Skills
Proficiency in advanced estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam,
Tekla , Lift/Sketch Deck).
Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and contracts.
Soft Skills
Effective communication and negotiation abilities.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to work collaboratively with all stakeholders (internal and external).
