About this role We are seeking a Senior Product Counsel to join our collaborative Legal Team. You will advise on products, compliance, and marketing initiatives, and contribute to a range of projects as Udemy scales its global business. You will help maintain our authentic culture while collaborating with teams to handle projects with flexibility, patience, and poise. This position reports to the Associate General Counsel.
What you’ll be doing
Provide strategic counsel to product, design, engineering, and marketing teams throughout the product lifecycle, balancing innovation with legal and business risks.
Advise on global compliance matters (consumer protection, privacy, accessibility, IP) with scalable guidance for international growth.
Partner with marketing on campaign reviews, pricing, influencer engagements, brand initiatives, and promotions, ensuring alignment with advertising laws and global consumer regulations.
Collaborate with support and security to address risk and build compliant user experiences through policies and processes.
Track evolving laws (including AI and digital marketplace regulations) and translate into actionable guidance.
Lead and manage legal advice on high-impact projects, aligning with business goals alongside senior leadership.
Build scalable frameworks to help teams self-serve while maintaining compliance.
About your skills
Communication:
Explain complex legal concepts clearly and persuasively, without legal jargon.
Decision making:
Identify practical risks and propose balanced solutions, ensuring stakeholder alignment in execution.
Prioritization:
Focus on what’s important and urgent; leverage AI to streamline workflows and increase impact.
Agility:
Learn quickly, adapt to priorities, and tackle unfamiliar challenges with confidence.

Manage strategic, cross-functional matters with high-level stakeholders and dependencies.
What you’ll have
Minimum 8 years of legal experience, primarily in-house advising in product, compliance, and marketing.
J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school or foreign equivalent.
Membership in at least one U.S. state bar in good standing.
Excellent communication skills to translate complex legal concepts into practical advice.
Strong judgment and decision-making in fast-paced environments balancing business and legal risk.
Ability to grasp complex legal/technical concepts, adapt to evolving priorities, and navigate unfamiliar challenges.
Strong organizational and prioritization abilities with a track record of managing a high volume of cross-functional matters.
Experience advising on consumer subscription products is a plus.
