Overview Uptown Animal Hospital, part of Mission Pet Health, is seeking a Full‑Time Lead Certified Veterinary Technician to join our team. With more than fifty years of providing quality veterinary services, the clinic is looking for a candidate ready to grow into a leadership role.
Location & Hours Location: 5545 North Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60640
Clinic Hours:
Mon: 8:30am – 6:00pm
Tues: 8:30am – 6:00pm
Wed: 8:30am – 6:00pm
Thu: 8:30am – 6:00pm
Fri: 8:30am – 6:00pm
Sat: 8:30am – 2:00pm
Sun: Closed
Shift: M‑F 8‑6 and rotating Saturdays 8‑2
Compensation: $23–$25 per hour

Job Summary The Lead Certified Veterinary Technician trains, supervises, and assists veterinary support staff in planning, coordinating, and performing a variety of duties related to animal health and client education. The role promotes greater efficiency by relieving veterinarians of technical and administrative tasks and encompasses all core duties of a Veterinary Technician.
Responsibilities
Maintain and uphold Core Values and Mission Statement of MVP.
Perform all functions related to Licensed Veterinary Technician job description.
Work alongside the Inventory Manager to purchase pharmaceutical supplies and medications, maintaining controlled substance and surgery logs.
Maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies.
Provide preventive healthcare recommendations and client education on vaccines, flea, and heartworm products, and support marketing of services such as dental cleaning, senior wellness, spay and neuter, and boarding.
Educate clients and team members on products, dietary items, and medications.
Assist in all aspects of hospital performance, including answering phones, scheduling appointments, client call backs, and prescription requests.
Ensure compliance with federal and state animal health laws, OSHA, radiation regulations, board requirements, and DEA statutes. Oversee ordering of dosimetry badges and related records.
Follow and enforce hospital policies set by the Practice Manager and Medical Lead.
Train and assist the veterinary support staff in performing technical and client education duties.
Make recommendations on personnel matters, disciplinary actions, and follow‑through. Provide feedback to direct supervisor as needed.
Provide guidance to subordinates, setting performance standards, monitoring performance, mediating interpersonal issues, and addressing concerns.
Conduct monthly departmental meetings and organize in‑service sessions as appropriate.
Manage and contribute to the overall flow of the clinic.
Create technical schedules aligning with doctors, team, surgery, and outpatient needs while monitoring overtime and payroll costs. Arrange shift coverage by seeking coverage from the technical team or covering shifts oneself.
Qualifications
Convey confidence and professionalism with clients, even in stressful situations.
Demonstrate patience, composure, and ability to handle a fast‑paced environment.
Enjoy working with animals and remain calm when animals are stressed, ill, or in pain.
Manage medical crises calmly and efficiently.
Perform SQ, IM, and IV injections.
Know dosage, usage, and common side‑effects of prescription drugs; explain them to clients.
Understand common anesthesia and recovery states; alert veterinarians to changes or concerns.
Know heartworm and external parasite preventatives; promote client education and sales.
Properly extubate, monitor temperature, and recover patients from anesthesia.
Navigate practice management software and provide technical support across departments.
Show strong writing skills and clear communication.
Proficiency with Word, iOS, Windows, practice management software, and communication tools.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Meet deadlines and exceed expectations.
Lead, motivate, and resolve personnel and team conflicts.
Assess client needs, meet quality standards, and evaluate satisfaction.
Apply knowledge of English language structure and composition.
Coperate with the Practice Manager to address patient satisfaction feedback.
Work independently and accept direction on assignments.
Oversee routine maintenance of equipment and determine necessary upkeep.
Understand procedures for receiving, treating, and scheduling patients, ordering supplies, and requesting laboratory tests.
Handle veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment care and storage.
