Faculty Job Description
The Department of Physics, housed in the Brailsford College of Arts and Sciences at Prairie View A&M University, invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track position for the rank of Assistant Professor. Responsibilities include teaching lecture and laboratory courses at the undergraduate level, conducting research involving undergraduate students, as well as service to the department, college, university, and field. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply though we particularly encourage candidates with prior teaching experience in physics at community or four year college level. The salary is determined in accordance with the University’s compensation structure and will be commensurate with the candidates’ education and experience, within the assigned salary range for this position.
Responsibilities
Teach lecture and laboratory courses, advise students, participate in curriculum and program development. Supervision of undergraduate students in their research projects. Actively engage in scholarly research activities aimed at publication of research in peer-reviewed journals, and presentations of research work at professional conferences. Grant proposal writing in search for external funding support for individual and collaborative research projects. Engage in student recruitment for undergraduate and graduate programs, take on committee assignments at department, college and University levels. Provide service to the community and the profession. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience
Ph.D. in Physics and postdoctoral work with substantial research experience in any area of physics. A solid record of published research commensurate with years since receiving Ph.D.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Able and willing to teach courses in Physical Science, General Physics, and University Physics lecture and laboratory courses; Able to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with departmental colleagues. Ability to develop and sustain an independent, externally funded undergraduate research program focused on advancing the science of their expertise.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in Physics and 2 years of postdoctoral research experience. Prior teaching experience at the post-secondary level. A research program which complements the expertise of current faculty members and applies innovative methods to solve contemporary problems in their field of expertise.
