Pay Base Pay Range: $156,644.00/yr - $203,639.00/yr.
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Eligible individuals must meet specific requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment.
Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed if qualified citizens cannot be recruited).
English Language Proficiency – proficiency in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Education – Master’s degree or higher in a physics‑science‑or‑engineering discipline recognized by an accredited college or university with at least 30 semester hours in medical physics, health physics, radiological science, physics, engineering, chemistry, or biology, or an equivalent foreign degree substantiated by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.
Board Certification – Persons hired in temporary medical physics (TMP) positions must be board‑certified in the field of therapeutic medical physics by an approved certifying body. Certification must be current and the applicant must abide by the certifying body’s continuing‑education requirements. Approved certifying bodies include:
The American Board of Radiology (ABR) – fields: therapeutic medical physics, therapeutic radiologic or therapeutic radiological physics, radiologic physics or radiological physics.
The American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) – subfield of radiation oncology physics.
The Canadian College of Physicians in Medicine (CCPM) – subfield of radiation oncology physics.
Completion of a minimum of one year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS‑13).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
Safe and efficient use of all radiotherapy devices for external‑beam radiotherapy.
Evaluation and safe operation of radiotherapy equipment through complex problem diagnosis and scheduled quality assurance.
Planning, dosimetry, and treatment methods for high‑dose‑rate and low‑dose‑rate brachytherapy.
Shielding methods, radiation survey, and safety training for external‑beam delivery systems.
Independent judgment in calibration, acceptance testing, and clinical commissioning of external‑beam photon and electron‑beam delivery systems.
Acceptance testing and commissioning of CT simulators.
3‑D treatment planning, intensity‑modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).
Processing multimodality imaging datasets for planning, verification, and assessment.
Clinical process steps and resource requirements for radiation oncology treatment planning and delivery.
Duties
Plan, deliver, verify, and monitor quality assurance of radiotherapy at all levels of complexity.
Recommend optimal modality and treatment technique for each patient.
Assure accuracy, safety, and correctness of planned and delivered radiation treatments.
Operate all radiation planning and delivery devices safely.
Provide technical oversight for entry‑level TMPs, medical dosimetrists, radiation therapists, and residents.
Develop medical physics policies and procedures for advanced treatment modalities such as IMRT and SBRT.
Operate and document the medical physics quality assurance program; ensure regulatory compliance within the Radiation Safety Officer’s safety program.
Educate the radiation oncology team on safety issues related to planning and delivery.
Physical Requirements
Lifts up to 50 pounds alone.
Walks, bends, stands, and reaches frequently during the workday.
Maintains visual acuity and hearing sufficient to fulfill duties.
Operates wheeled equipment throughout the facility.
Maintains fine motor skills for scheduling and preparation of equipment and supplies.
Engages in sustained activities for many hours in accordance with state labor law.
Work Schedule Full‑time: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Telework: Not Available. This position is not virtual.
