Base Pay Range $97,752.00/yr - $151,114.00/yr

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (1 to 5 years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.

English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

Education: Master’s degree or higher in a physics, science, or engineering discipline recognized by an accredited college or university with at least 30 semester hours in medical physics, health physics, radiological science, physics, engineering, chemistry, or biology.

Equivalent foreign degree and coursework substantiated by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.

Board Certification: Must be board certified in therapeutic medical physics by an approved certifying body. The board certificate must be current and the applicant must meet continuing education requirements.

Approved Certifying Bodies: American Board of Radiology (ABR) – therapeutic medical physics, therapeutic radiologic, radiological physics, etc.; American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) – subfield of Radiation Oncology Physics; Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM) – subfield of Radiation Oncology Physics.

Exception for Non-Board Certified – Entry Level Candidates: Board‑eligible TMPs may receive a temporary appointment under 38 U.S.C. § 7405(c)(2)(B), with an optional two‑year waiver if supervised by a board‑certified TMP. This exception applies only at GS‑12 entry level.

Grade Determinations: GS‑12 Therapeutic Medical Physicist (Entry Level) – Experience, Education, and Board Certification. No further qualifications required.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Detailed scientific and technical knowledge of radiotherapy device physics, clinical applications, commissioning, quality assurance, imaging modalities, brachytherapy, shielding, regulatory compliance, and multi‑modality treatment planning.

Preferred Experience: Board certification or eligibility for board certification (Recent Graduates).

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS‑13. Applicants may be selected at GS‑12 or GS‑13.

Duties

Open continuous announcement for filling positions at facilities in the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center area until January 2026.

Work under the direction of the Section Chief and Chief Physicist.

Develop and implement advanced radiotherapy techniques and special initiatives.

Collaborate closely with radiation oncologists, medical physicists, dosimetrists, therapists, and other team members to support day‑to‑day clinical operations.

Board‑certified or board‑eligible professional practice of therapeutic medical physics.

Obtain board certification within two years of appointment; lack of certification may result in termination.

Plan, deliver, verify, and monitor quality assurance of radiotherapy at all complexity levels.

Recommend optimal modalities and treatment techniques for each patient.

Evaluate quality, safety, and accuracy of radiation treatments to ensure correct dose delivery.

Operate all radiation planning and delivery devices safely.

Implement high‑technical difficulty radiation therapy solutions.

Design radiation therapy treatment plans and monitor patient records.

Consult with the radiation oncologist on difficult cases and perform patient‑specific validation measurements.

Participate in development of medical physics policies and procedures for advanced modalities such as IMRT, SBRT, and brachytherapy.

Ensure regulatory compliance within the Radiation Safety Officer’s program.

Educate radiation oncology team members on safety issues related to planning and delivery.

Complete additional departmental tasks as assigned.

Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 08:00 am‑04:30 pm (subject to change).
