Position Overview As our Material Science & Engineering Engineer you will be part of a team assisting multiple nuclear development projects at our Advanced Technologies research and development organization in Lynchburg, VA. The engineer will identify material solutions based on design requirements, evaluate manufacturing and technology readiness (MRL/TRL), and advise on sourcing, development and production pathways.
Location On‑site in Lynchburg, VA at the Advanced Technologies Office
Your Day to Day as a Materials Science & Engineering Engineer
Support the evaluation of materials for a particular application based on required performance characteristics and required manufacturing and technology readiness levels.
Execute development projects to reduce risk and improve MRL/TRL in support of space and terrestrial applications, including maintaining material selection requirements, guidelines, and usage agreements.
Interface with nuclear, mechanical, and electrical engineers on multi‑disciplinary development projects.
Required Qualifications
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering or physics (e.g., Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics).
Strong skill set in materials science, including processing, structure, and performance of metallic materials.
Experience with DED metal additive manufacturing of refractory Nb alloys.
Experience in failure analysis of metallic components using SEM.
Experience in statistical experimental design and ANOVA assessment.
Mechanical testing experience of metallic and ceramic components.
Experience with ASTM standards related to thermal quenching of components (e.g., ASTM C1525 and ASTM C1161).
Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to multi‑task.
U.S. citizenship.
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE or DOD security clearance as required.
Preferred Qualifications
Material system experience in austenitic and martensitic stainless steels.
Understanding of various welding technologies (ebeam, laser, resistance, etc.).
Understanding of ASME codes for existing nuclear reactor materials and development of ASME code cases for next‑generation reactors.
