Systems Administrator – Database & Application Support
UTHealth Houston is seeking a Systems Administrator to join the Database & Application Support team within Data Center Operations (DCO). This team focuses on the design, implementation, and support of clinical, enterprise, and departmental-level application systems. Primary responsibilities include server and database administration, cloud operational support, content management system administration, application systems and support, systems integration and automation, business intelligence, and working closely with application owners to assist with performance tuning, troubleshooting installations, and upgrades. About Data Center Operations
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) is the most comprehensive academic health center in the UT System. DCO, under the direction of the Infrastructure Team, operates the university’s primary data centers and administers standards for multiple data centers across the UTHealth campus. DCO is comprised of three primary areas: Infrastructure & Operational Support, Database & Application Support, and Data Center and Infrastructure. Position Summary
Responsible for the day‑to‑day activities related to system stability, reliability, and security. Position Key Accountabilities
Utilize appropriate procedures and processes to ensure the safety and integrity of servers, data systems, file structures, operating systems, and software. Install, maintain, configure, and upgrade UNIX operating systems to improve reliability, safety, and performance. Work with the Network Security Analyst to ensure operating system security and integrity by detecting hackers and ensuring remote access is encrypted. Ensure data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations in conjunction with the Disaster Recovery & Security Analyst. Perform basic and intermediate–level shell and kernel programming and testing. Conduct studies of projected enhancements in hardware and software and present recommendations to management. Conduct performance measurement and evaluation of servers to ensure Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are met. Implement security and disaster recovery according to established standards, policy, and guidelines. Participate in all phases of total system planning and in the generation of justifications and specifications for facility requirements and enhancements. Implement system software projects. Present technical briefings. Perform other duties as assigned. Certification / Skills
Ability to configure and administer diverse servers and operating systems. Familiar with web technology, database concepts, and networking. Minimum Education
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in information technology. Minimum Experience
One (1) year of experience in information technology support and systems administration in diverse environments. Preferred experience with the network and server hardware, software, and security tools that UTHSC‑H has deployed. Physical Requirements
Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects. Security Sensitive
This position is security‑sensitive as defined by Texas Education Code 51.215, Texas Government Code 411.094, and related statutes. Personnel in such positions are routinely reviewed for factors such as criminal history or continuous connections to the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary. Residency Requirement
