Project Overview Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State. The project uses vitrification technology to process 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste from Hanford’s plutonium production legacy.
Job Summary HLW Mechanical Field Engineer – responsible for construction engineering within the Piping/Mechanical discipline, utilizing nuclear codes and standards for pipe, equipment, and machinery installations. Duties include developing work plans, interpreting vendor drawings, coordinating materials, performing inspections, documenting progress, resolving design conflicts, and ensuring compliance with design requirements.
Major Responsibilities
Coordinate with engineering on constructability and design issues related to mechanical equipment and systems.
Develop work plans, coordinate materials, perform and document inspections, report progress, and resolve conflicts in design and construction related to the installation and testing of piping/mechanical equipment and commodities.
Provide field engineering support and assistance to superintendents, supporting personnel in meeting cost and time schedules, verifying materials, equipment, and quality.
Provide leadership in a team‑based environment.
Prepare material take‑offs, support field procurement in inspection and receipt of piping and pipe‑support materials.
Review construction drawings and schedules.
Interface with survey team for laser scanning, as‑built, and general layout for equipment and piping installations.
Review specifications, procedures, inspection reports, delivery schedules, vendor manuals and technical data.
Develop pressure test packages, perform testing, witness acceptance, and document results.
Coordinate with subcontractor work efforts and interface with client personnel as required.
Interface with the Construction Automation group and Project Controls; perform take‑offs, provide input to quantity tracking applications, and report weekly installed quantities.
Perform constructability reviews of engineering design, resolve issues with engineering and fabricator.
Work within TEAMWorks to verify accurate data from engineering and suppliers.
Lead safety initiatives and commit to Bechtel’s Zero Accident Program.

Education And Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction, or a related field from an accredited university and 1–2 years of field engineering or related experience (or 5–6 years of directly related experience in lieu of a degree).
Authorized to work and remain in the United States without Bechtel visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Must complete and pass pre‑employment drug screen, physical (if on site), and background check (employment and education verification).
Must obtain a Department of Energy badge for Hanford Site access.
Non‑U.S. citizens from designated countries must meet additional security requirements.
Physically able to conduct field inspections, walk‑downs, climb ladders, scaffolding, use fall protection and PPE, work on uneven surfaces, and navigate confined spaces.
Minimum Qualifications
Field construction experience interpreting specifications, procedures, vendor drawings, and installation instructions.
Knowledge of piping P&ID’s, isometrics drawings, and pipe‑support drawings.
Experience scoping, preparing, executing, and restoring mechanical systems and equipment.
Collaboration with diverse construction disciplines and oversight organizations.
Drug screen, physical, and background check compliance; DOE badge required.
Experience with pressure testing of piping.
Strong knowledge of ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII Division 1, and ASTM standards.
Experience overseeing subcontractors.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of nuclear construction.
Experience with Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) and associated applications, tools, and practices.
Familiarity with Bechtel’s Standard Work Process Procedures (SWPPs) or Nuclear Work Process Procedures (NWPPs).
Experience with Bechtel’s Zero Accident Safety Program and current industry standards.
