Overview
The Costume Fabricator plays a key role in building and maintaining puppet costumes for film productions. This position involves fabricating costumes to meet creative and technical requirements, performing alterations, and ensuring costumes are functional on set. The role requires a solid understanding of pattern-making, garment construction, and costume maintenance, along with the ability to collaborate across departments to meet production deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop patterns for puppet costumes using flat patterning and basic draping techniques
Sew, alter, and assemble costume components, ensuring alignment with the production’s visual style and performance needs
Construct internal supports, structures, or undergarments to enhance costume durability and functionality
Perform on-set repairs and adjustments as needed, including quick changes and emergency fixes
Follow detailed construction notes to replicate costumes precisely
Maintain detailed notes and documentation to ensure accurate costume replication
Assist with fittings and incorporate feedback to adjust costumes for optimal performance
Collaborate with Puppeteers, Mech teams, and the Costume Lead to ensure costumes perform properly during filming
Help organize, maintain, and track costumes to ensure quality control throughout production
Flexibility to work long hours as needed during the productions
Qualifications
3-5 years of experience in costume fabrication, a background in film, theater, or television is a plus
Proficiency in both hand and machine sewing, with strong alteration skills
Ability to follow instructions and replicate designs with precision
Competency in pattern-making and garment construction techniques
Strong problem-solving abilities and ability to make quick fixes on set
Good knowledge of textiles and fabric care
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Experience working with Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop is a plus
Time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changing production schedules
Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and communicate clearly
Familiarity with Clo or similar pattern-making software is a plus but not required
Team player with good communication and collaboration skills
Willingness to learn, and take direction
Physical Demands
The role requires standing, sitting, walking, and operating standard office equipment.
The employee must occasionally lift and move items up to 15 pounds.
Vision requirements include close focus, distance vision, and adaptability.
Work Environment
The position involves working indoors, under typical office conditions, with exposure to fluctuating indoor temperatures.
Noise levels are moderate.
