Overview

Summary: The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training and making workflow recommendations. Responsibilities

Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc. Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures. Explain clearly and courteously the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required. Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Fully understand all physicians\' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order. Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy. Package specimens for transport and store sample according to required temperature; place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes; label accurately and follow protocol for transport to maintain specimen integrity. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. Attend annual department trainings and respond to inquiries via telephone or by reading laboratory results when needed. Minimum Qualifications

Valid phlebotomy certification for the state where employed as required in some states. Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. High School Diploma or GED. EEO and Notice
