Overview
The Psychologist for the Wilmington VA Medical Center is assigned to the Psychology Service within the Primary Care Mental Health Integration (PCMHI) program. The PCMHI Psychologist will work within a fast-paced primary care team and consult with eight to ten patients per pay period with the primary goal of assisting Patient Aligned Clinical Team (PACT) members with identification, treatment and management of mental health and behavioral medicine conditions in the enrolled population.
Responsibilities The Psychologist works administratively within Behavioral Health Services at the Wilmington VA Medical Center, with primary assignment to PCMHI in primary care. Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Provide immediate direct and on-site access for behavioral health consultation assessment
Work in conjunction with other PC-MHI team members to support PC-MHI
Provide input, updates and/or recommendations regarding behavioral health needs of Veterans
Conduct initial and comprehensive psychosocial assessments of Veterans referred by primary care providers
Review subjective and objective data, assess high risk factors, provide clinical assessment, and determine the treatment plan for Veterans
Administer and score psychological tests and cognitive screenings to support treatment planning
Evaluate Veterans in terms of the need for psychotherapy and the probability of psychotherapy being effective
Determine psychological diagnosis and prognosis, assess risk factors, and develop a preliminary disposition plan involving the Veteran and his/her family
Provide a full range of brief, solution-focused therapeutic interventions to primary care patients not currently established with a mental health provider, including cognitive and behavioral therapy and other evidence-based modalities through group and individual formats
Actively participate in assigned PACT treatment plan meetings and educate interdisciplinary teams on evidence-based interventions
May be involved in Psychology Training Program and Training Committee and in the training of graduate trainees, as appropriate
Prepare and teach seminars/workshops for WVAMC trainees/staff on topics within interest/competency areas
Additional duties as assigned

Experience: At least one year as a professional psychologist at GS-11 level; unlicensed incumbents may practice under supervision with reduced intensity.
Knowledge of and ability to apply a wide range of professional psychological treatments or assessment methods
Ability to design and implement effective treatment strategies
Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures
Ability to conduct research activities
Ability to perform basic research tasks within a team
Staff Psychologist, GS-13
(Full Performance Level)
Experience: At least two years as a professional psychologist, including at least one year at GS-12 level.
Knowledge of and ability to apply professional psychological treatments to a full range of patient populations
Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health
Knowledge of clinical research literature
Assignment: Licensed independent practice; may be assigned to various VA programs and settings and may engage in teaching, training, and research activities.
Preferred Experience:
Two or more years of clinical experience in VA or similar setting.
